Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Hughenden, Queensland ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 2025

Date: 5th July 2025

Travelled: 255 kms from Charters Towers to Hughenden

Visited: Hughenden

Stayed: Hughenden RV Campground, Free, S20.84329, E144.20649

The Flinders Highway west of Charters is very quiet this morning just the odd very long truck heading in the opposite direction. The railway line is close by on either our left or right for much of the 3 hour dive. Driving takes your full attention, there are some very narrow bridges and the Jayco doesnโ€™t like the table drains and culverts.

Filling up with fuel which is getting more expensive as we continue west Pam takes the opportunity to check out the healthy food options in the bain-marie pictured below.

We safely roll into Hughenden and follow the GPS to the free camp down near the river. As the picture below shows everyone loves a free night. By drinking time the place is full and our new best friends from Gin Gin in the motorhome next door join us for a chat.

Hughenden, Flinders Shire, Queensland, 4821, Australia

Pictured below the Hughenden highlights. Itโ€™s a neat and tidy place of just over a thousand people. The signs tell us itโ€™s sheep and cattle country but we havenโ€™t seen a sheep for 700 kms so there keeping a low profile.

Hughenden is within the tourist dinosaur triangle, note the sulo bin outside the discovery centre pictured below, which by the way closes early on Saturday afternoon.

Up not really early itโ€™s another forced march this time around Hughenden Recreational Lake. Itโ€™s a 3 kms walk, I fain a hammy and let Pam do the second lap solo. Itโ€™s a great facility and just across the road from our free stop.

So thatโ€™s Hughenden done, we continue west for Julia Creek.
