Date: 8th to 10th June 2024
Travelled: 330 kms from Bundaberg to Rockhampton via Burnett Heads
Visited: Burnett Heads, QLD
Stayed: Lighthouse HP Burnett Heads, $35, S24.76336, E152.40827
Budget: 20 days @ $XX per day
Itโs an easy drive through the cane fields to Burnett Head other than slowing to cross the many cane train tracks that crisscross every kilometre or so. Burnets Heads stands on the mouth of the Burnett River. The campsite is comparatively small about 40 places.
After a short discussion with the manageress we park up into a spot high enough for the Jayco. We have a lovely view across the tidal bay within the double break wall that protects the harbour.
First afternoon is a ride down into the village centrum which has an IGA, pub, bakery and cafe, then another kilometre on around the harbour. Then we turn east and ride the foreshore for another 4 kilometres to Mon Repos where we find a sign telling us the cycleway goes on through the National Park and Bargara. So call it tomorrowโs adventure.
Next morning after some relatively unsuccessful fishing we set off on the bikes once again. Burnett Heads certainly has some interesting trails and cycleways.
Not that itโs turtle season but the ride through the turtle sanctuary and the nesting beaches are interesting.
We could have stayed a few days longer, but there are no vacancies so we will put Burnett on our list for our next winter escape.
Next morning we make ready for the road and continue north. Itโs a long relatively uninteresting 300+ drive to Rockhampton interrupted by a very nasty collision between two B-doubles.
As we have visited Rockhampton on a previous trip our stop is just for an overnight sleep in the cities free camp Kershaw Park. Tomorrow on to Yeppoon.
