We steam into San Francisco Bay around midday, 2100 passengers awaiting the Golden Gate. The closer we get the thicker the fog. Needless to say we were all a little disappointed. Suddenly the fog started to cleared as we passed Alcatraz leaving us a wonderful view of the city.
We disembarking to meet up with Rene and Gloria who live in Morgan Hill and hour from SF. Our friendship began whilst cruising the Mediterranean in 2011, having continued through emails ever since. After a catch up session at the Hard Rock Cafe, we explore the Fisherman’s Wharf area, before taking a cable car to Union Square. ย The weather changes every few minutes as sunshine gives way to fog, then sunshine again.
Returning to Fisherman’s Wharf in the early evening we dine at a local seafood restaurant. Then wander back through pier 39 before saying our goodbyes and returning to the Infinity.
We rise early to catch the first ferry to Alcatraz Island from nearby pier 35. The morning is clear and mild, the 10 minute trip surprises us with seals just floating by. We wander Alcatraz, the audio tour is a great insight into the history of the jail and those who worked or were imprisoned there. ย Back in SF, we head to pier 39 for clam chowder, sourdough bread and a couple of beers at the Fog Harbour Fish House. Then back to the Infinity to farewell SF and head for Mexico.
