Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Cape Town Day3, South Africa ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ 2025

Date : 27th March 2025

Travelled : The Cape of Good Hope by private tour

Visited : Bo-Kaap, Signal Hill, Chapmanโ€™s Peak Drive and Cape of Good Hope.

Stayed : Pullman City Centre, Cape Town

Up early as usual for a coffee followed by one of Pamโ€™s forced marches around the city. Some pictures below. Getting to know Cape Town fairly well now.

Most of what seems to be the public transport here is by mini-buses, zooming here and there sounding their horns. This morning we found a hundred or more of them in this huge terminal above the railway station.

Also pictured below a great view of Table Mountain from hereโ€ฆ

My original plan was to hire a car to tour down to the Cape of Good Hope but for A$300 we get a car and driver, so this morning we get picked up at 9.30 and on our way.

Our first stop is Bo-Kaap a small district of colourful houses in the Cape Malay Quarter. Itโ€™s predominantly a Muslim area.

The driver, Blessing keeps grabbing my phone and takes 50 photos of us all pretty well the same, so lots of deleting tonight.

Our second stop is Signal Hill on the edge of the city for a few photos.

Back in the car we drive the ritzy beach suburbs of Clifton and Camps Beach. Our 3rd stop is Hout Bay. We stop and watch the seals playing and have a coffee.

The bottom photo is from a viewing point looking back at Hout Bay (another 50 photos).

The driver pays the toll and we continue south on Chapmanโ€™s Peak Drive. Itโ€™s a very scenic drive as the road hangs on the edge of the cliff for about 10 kilometres. The tollway concludes near Noordhoek with a spectacular view of the beach.

We drive on to Simonโ€™s Town and the penguins. Another Rand200 pp (nearly A$20 each)

Finally into the Cape of Good Hope National Park. Note the entry prices on the sign. We’ve come to realise anything you would want to visit is double or quadruple the normal price if your a foreigner.

Itโ€™s an interesting drive through the park looking for wildlife and seeing little. The Cape is just a car-park and a sign which Blessing takes another 50 photos. Cape Point light house is just a kilometre further around the corner.

We lunch at a restaurant at the base of the Cape Point next to the funicular. Lunch was expensive and far from the best meal weโ€™ve had in SA but it did provide a fabulous view across the Atlantic. The Flying Dutchman Funicular makes for an easy and interesting ride to the light house.

Mind you the wind was absolutely howling up at the light house and I had to put a few rocks in Pamโ€™s pockets to stop her blowing away.

So the Cape is done, Blessing takes us home via the predominately black neighbourhoods so it was an interesting contrast having gone out this morning through the beach-side suburbs. Back at the Pullman at 4.30 for a swim in the pool.

Out for dinner at our new favourite Japanese restaurant in Cape Town. Only half a block from the Pullman. The Obi was reasonably priced (cheaper than our favourite in Ramsgate) and delicious. Just what was needed after deleting 490 photos.

That was our dayโ€ฆ
