Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Travelling South, New South Wales ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 2021

Date: 19-20th November 2021

Travelled: 175 kms from Conjola to Cobargo

Visited: The South Coast, NSW.

Stayed: Cobargo Hotel Campground, free with limited services. S36.38951, E149.88678

Budget: 2 days @ $0 per day.

Dan has opened the border and without a lot of pre-planning we find ourselves departing Taren Point for Victoria. The school holidays are still more than a few weeks away, giving us an opportunity to tour eastern Victoria before the Christmas hustle and bustle starts.

We have taken the Jayco for a couple of short trips recently as the loosening of the lock-down restrictions have allowed. Practice makes perfect and we pack the Jayco for the road following Pamโ€™s โ€˜donโ€™t forgetโ€™ list.

A cover for the bikes the last thing fitted. Tailor made it was only finished this morning after some last minute alterations.

We overnight with the kangaroos in Garyโ€™s driveway at Lake Conjola. The grey weather has followed us from Sydney and we leave Conjola in the drizzle.

Rejoining the Princess Highway the drizzle continues as we pass through Milton but by the time we reach Ulladulla it clears so we stop and go for a walk around town and out to Warden Head Lighthouse.

Warden Head Lighthouse (circa 1879), one of only two constructed of caste iron in Australia.

5 kms later weโ€™ve walked the main street, the lighthouse and taken in the misty grey views across the bay from the viewing point. We are soon back in the Jayco, continuing our travels.

Deep Creek Dam

We stop for a late breakfast and coffee at Deep Creek Dam just north of Mogo. Roadside rest areas seem hard to find this morning until we see the sign for the dam viewing point. We have carpark to ourselves, for half an hour or so.

South of Narooma we spot the sign for the historic village of Central Tilba. We take the turn and follow the road up the valley. After executing an amazing reverse park in the main street we head off to do a little exploration.

Central Tilba has somehow escaped the recent fires, Bate street is lined with simple weatherboard cottages, shops and a single hotel all beautifully preserved. Whilst Tilba is a bit of a tourist trap itโ€™s an interesting walk all the same. I unsuccessfully attempt to discourage Pam from exploring every shop and we eventually return to the Jayco with a $20 block of cheese (small).

Departing Tilba we return to the highway and continue south. The drizzle returns and we spend the next hour driving in the wet. We have set the GPS for a free stop in Cobargo. The traffic what little there was, has all but disappeared.

Cobargo appears more a village than a town as we drive the main street. The hotel campsite is just over the Narira Creek bridge. Cobargo Hotel seems a little out of place here. Itโ€™s a big, relatively modern and well maintained pub with a motel and camping ground out the back.

After checking with the manager we find ourselves a spot amongst a dozen or so motorhomes and a couple of caravans. The drizzle has really settled in now, so weโ€™ll explore Cobargo tomorrow if the weather allows.
