Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Limerick, Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช 2019

Date: 19th June 2019

Travelled: 141 kilometres from Fenit, County Kerry to Bunratty, County Clare

Visited: Limerick, County Limerick

Stayed: Bunratty Castle car-park, free N52.69860, W08.80987

Budget: 17 days @ โ‚ฌ94 per day

It was warm and sunny last night and the Irish had gone a little mad. They were out there swimming and kayaking at 10 pm when we gave up shaking our heads and went to bed. The ocean water is cold in my opinion, still definitely a steamer job.

This morning itโ€™s all quiet, just a few old ladies out for their usual morning walk around Fenit Point. So we have a coffee and fruit, before joining them.

On our morning walk. The lighthouse on Tralee Bay just across the way.

An hour later we service the Hymer and continue on the Wild Atlantic Way (N). The weather sunny and warm, then cloudy and cool a minute or two later. Another hour later we roll into Tarbert on the River Shannon, have a coffee in the sun. We walk 50 metres down Main Street and its starts to rain. We retreat back to the Hymer and continue on to Limerick.

Just took this picture of a lovely rose ๐ŸŒน in Tarbert just when the rain started.

We drive into Limerick finding King Johnโ€™s Castle car-park easily enough (free, but no overnight N52.67120, W08.62477). It proves to be the ideal place to park while visiting Limerick.

Lots of display boards, mock ups and short videos. To be frank we were both underwhelmed by King Johnโ€™s Castle. We have done 3 of these castles tours so far in Ireland and Limerick Castle has the least to offer. There is very little of the castle remaining just a couple of towers and one set of battlements. You do get a nice view of the river and the city from the tower and battlements, but thatโ€™s it.

Bit windy but Pam does her best.

The best view of King Johnโ€™s Castle was from just down river. It actually looks like a castle from here.

Walking down the hill we come to St Maryโ€™s Cathedral. You can read about it below. We decided โ‚ฌ5 pp was too much and didnโ€™t go inside.

Pano looking over the River Shannon, Limerick.

So we wander up to the centre of Limerick, walk the shops, the river and a couple of the arcades. Luckily Pam doesnโ€™t see anything that takes her fancy, so its a bonus.

A memorial to the fallen in the 1916 uprising.

So we depart Limerick for the 15 klm drive to Bunratty. The castle car-park at Bunratty is motorhome friendly and we soon arrive and settle in for the evening.
