Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

County Clare, Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช 2019

Date: 20th June 2019

Travelled: 171 kilometres from Bunratty to Milltown Malbay, both in County Clare

Visited: Kilrush, Carrigaholt Castle, Loop Head Lighthouse โ‚ฌ5 pp, Kilkee and Milltown Malbay

Stayed: Tom Maloneโ€™s Field (Aire), โ‚ฌ10 T+P+W N52.85666, W09.40268

Budget: 18 days @ โ‚ฌ96 per day

Not the best nightโ€™s sleep. Some lad came into our car-park and started playing loud music about 11.30. We had been asleep for a couple of hours by that stage, so it was annoying. Anyhow people were exiting the function centre nearby and he soon left with his music and silence returns. Thatโ€™s the problem with wildcamping, its like a box of chocolates you never know what your going to get.

We service the Hymer and make our way onto the M18 motorway into Ennis. Pams paternal grandmother was born here so we do a short detour, just for the vibe, before continuing west on the N68 to re-join the Wild Atlantic Way at Kilrush.

A memorial to the events of 1916 in the centre of Kilrush. We stop for breakfast near the port, do a quick shop at the Supervalu and go for a walk around town. The market day stalls are opening in the square, but nothing catches Pamโ€™s interest.

We can see the silhouette of Carrigaholt Castle against the skyline for miles before we get close. There are no signs but we find a small car-park. A farmer has set an electric fence and a sign warning of a bull. Knowing the difference between a bull and a couple of heifers we jump the fence and have a look.

Back in the Hymer we continue on the WAW. The road is narrow and slow. There is little traffic and we seemed to find a little passing space whenever an approaching vehicle is spotted.

Irish Roads.
(A) a white line in the middle means its wide enough to pass another car
(B) no white line means look for a passing space
(C) grass in the middle of the road, good luck

Kilkee, Munster, Ireland

Finally we arrive at Loop Lighthouse. The present tower stands 23 metres tall and was commissioned in 1854. There has been a signal or light here since 1670. We opt for the โ‚ฌ5 tour which is conducted by volunteers.

Another lighthouse off the list, we continue north rejoining the WAW, stopping for lunch in Kilkee.

A late lunch behind us we consider our options, the Cliffs of Moher for an early walk or Milltown Malbay for a late night of Irish music. The LP suggests Milltown is the home of Irish music in the west so we decide to give it a try. Amazingly there is the Irish version of a motorhome aire in Milltown at โ‚ฌ10 a night, the deck is stacked.

As you can tell by the time we havenโ€™t been up this late for a while.

Michael and Pam
