Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Dursey Island, Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช 2019

Date: 15th June 2019

Travelled: 132 kilometres from Goleen to Travara, both in the County of Cork

Visited: Dursey Island

Stayed: Travara Marina car-park. Free toilets and water. N51.67739, W09.99963 P4N

Budget: 13 days @ โ‚ฌ90 per day

It was a little warmer overnight and the sun is shinning in Goleen this morning. Goleen is only a tiny village, just 4 pubs and a shop and cafe and we walked it all yesterday. As we plan to walk Dursey later in the day, itโ€™s coffee and fruit before heading east on the R591.

Our French neighbours were watching TV when we arrived yesterday and still watching it as we left. Probably waiting for the roads to improve before continuing on.

Whilst the road is very narrow, there is no traffic this time of the morning. We are back on the N71 in half an hour and soon arrive in Bantry. Itโ€™s a large port town, with an least 3 potholes for every resident. We turn into the Super Value for a stock up. I must add these supermarkets are excellent, not as economical as a Lidl, but a great variety of fresh fruit etc.

Pam has found a laundromat at a service station on google and we drive on 5 kms to Ballylickey. We first saw these laundromats in France several years ago and we have seen a few here as well. So we do a big wash and dry. I give the Hymer a good pressure wash and fill it with water as well.

Itโ€™s almost lunchtime by the time we continue to Glengarriff and turn onto the Ring of Beara. Another drive on the WAW.

We get our first glimpse of the cable car, a little rusty is OK.

Best described as a rickety 1960 contraption that sway and bumps its way precariously 30m above Dursey Sound.

Having read the signs we head off on the Dursey Loop.

Our walk done we make our way back to the cable car. We only wait for 15 minutes on the return journey, turn the Hymer around and continue on the Ring of Beara. I do a little search on our data-base and spot a likely overnight at Travara Marina so I put in the co-ordinates.

Looks just right !
