Date: 23rd June 2019
Travelled: 193 kilometres from Clifden, County Galway to Keel Beach, County Mayo
Visited: Just driving the Wild Atlantic Way
Stayed: Keel Beach West, upper car-park, free with T+B N53.96953, W10.19357
Budget: 21 days @ โฌ91 per day
The wind was gusting out of the south-west all night. We woke a couple of times to the noise of flags flapping and the wind whistling through the rigging of the yacht next door. We had planned a walk back into Clifden this morning, but the wind hasnโt abated by the time coffee is done. So we drive back to town, park and go for a walk.
Since arriving in Ireland it has rained pretty much every day but just 10 minutes and the sun soon returns. Not today.
An hour later we find a parking spot with a view overlooking Hillary Harbour. We passed Kylemore Abbey a few kms back but didnโt see the point of paying the entrance fee in the rain.
So we continued on in the rain though Westport before turning onto the R319 for Achill Island. We have the co-ordinates for a stop at West Keel Beach.
Achill Island, West Mayo, Connacht, Ireland
An hour later the wind rises again and the Hymer start rocking with the gusts. Itโs not going to be a good night, so we retreat back to Keel.

Loving the balmy weather guys. Spent a month there once it rained a lot then too.
Hi you intrepid travellers.
I see more of you when you are over there, then when you are in residence in the Shire. Am greatly enjoying your photos. Pam ! I envy your figure of a young girl and good onya for dressing in the colours of the Green Isle. At your Which-Bank?, I caught the glimpse of a “new-look” financial advisor….the modern version of Boy George, I kid you not, the lot, including lipstick and mascara !
I have a feeling that that hot girl is the daughter of Michael ? Note to self: do not tell her parents that I hope she is well protected by strong young people…the Maghreb is not the safest of places for such stunning young beauties. (Says one who, in her youth, actually literally HITCHHIKED there, but that was a thousand and one years ago…)
Ireland? I LOVE it, love the weather, the wind, the rain, the people and the biggest oysters in the world, down in Cork….and Yes, their music…..*dreaming* (you may call me a sentimental old whatsit.
