Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Galley Head, Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช 2019

Date: 12th June 2019

Travelled: 106 kilometres from Mollyโ€™s Beach to Baltimore, County Cork

Visited: Timoleague, Galley Head and Drombeg Stone Circle

Stayed: Caseyโ€™s Hotel, Baltimore, free if you use the pub. N51.48499, W09.36211

Budget: 11 days @ โ‚ฌ94 per day

We experienced a quiet overnight on Mollyโ€™s Beach. At some stage I heard the wave breaking loudly on the shingle, but thought the tide must be in. Itโ€™s a dull and overcast start, windy and cool, but itโ€™s not raining. For the first time since we arrived in Ireland we are able to service the Hymer in one stop.

Our French neighbours depart as do we, driving the Wild Atlantic Way (N).

Mind you away from the N roads the road surface is poor and the going slow. Twenty kilometres on as we approach Timoleague we can see the ruin of something, so we find a park and go exploring.

My favourite was the Garda Station, if your donโ€™t know the Garda you havenโ€™t been watching Jack Taylor on Netflix.

We continue on the WAW, after a short section of the N71 we turn for Dunowen Head. Itโ€™s a pleasant drive around Clonakilty Bay.

According to the LP one of the best surf beaches in Southern Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช, not today perhaps.

On our way after a coffee, we make the mistake of turning for Galley Head. Spending the best part of an hour lost in the narrow laneways, bumping into other people lost as well. We finally encountered the local postman and we were back on track.

So that was Galley Head. We had a walk around for 10 minutes, then enjoyed this view whilst we had lunch.

Disappointed after all that drama to reach Galley Head. We continue on to more drama at the Dombeg Stone Circle which is only about 10 kilometres around Rosscarbery Bay. The road up to the circle is narrow and particularly bumpy. Arriving to find the parking area has a height โ˜ ๏ธ barrier I start to turn the Hymer around when someone runs over waving his arms. Not exactly sure of what he said in German but โ€˜your scooter rack is brokenโ€™, but that was essentially what had happened.

A weld on one side of the rack had given way. Long story short, we took off the scooter, locked it up and headed for the last large town we passed. Got lucky, less than a kilometres down the hill we found a โ€˜farm machinery we can fix anything type of placeโ€™. An hour later itโ€™s been repaired (โ‚ฌ30 and he added a strengthening gusset on each side, to counter the Irish roads) and we have the scooter back on.

You can read about the Drombeg Stone Circle here yourself.

Another view of the stones, lovely views beyond as well.

We are soon on the road again. Itโ€™s been a long day and occasionally stressful day as we continue west on the N71 again. The TotalMotorhomeIreland website map indicates Caseyโ€™s Pub in Baltimore that welcomes motorhomes so we decide on pub-grub tonight.
