Date: 8-9th July 2024
Travelled: 105 kms from Rolleston to Carnarvon Gorge ย
Visited: Carnarvon Gorge ย
Stayed: Sandstone Park, $39, S25.07282, E148.27892ย ย
Budget: 50 days @ $XX per day
Another relatively short drive today, the first 60 kms from Rolleston is relatively quick, but once we turn off the Carnarvon Highway it slows considerably. For the next 40 kms the road narrows, its mostly unfenced pastureland divided by cattle grids which prove to be rough as.
We have booked a couple of nights at Sandstone Park, just outside the National Park.
We arrive in good time to find our spot, but rather than settle in we drive on the extra 3 kms to the NP information centre. After having a general wander about we do a couple of short walks before heading back up to Sandstone with a plan for tomorrow.
Pam had the slow cooking out at Rolleston so itโs easy meals for the next couple of nights.
I wonโt detail the walk more than to say we covered 21.5 kms on the second day, a couple of the side trails were closed due to recent flood damage. The Aboriginal galleries make the walk most impressive.
The walk took almost 7 hours including a number of short breaks. The last 4 kms completed in torrential rain when the heavens opened on our way back. Certainly glad to be back in the Jayco getting out of wet cloths and boots and a hot shower.
Can recommend Sandstone Park, no power or water but wonderful views and very neat and tidy they even have there own Optus network link.

What a wonderful report especially as we were there in 2012 with our caravan then and the road in was extremely rough and shook our van to pieces. We were in a hurry then and didn’t see that beautiful and amazing scenery. Great photos and you are amazing walkers
Safe travels Johannes
Looks like a beautiful walk
