Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Nebo, Queensland ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 2024

Date: 23rd to 2nd July 2024

Travelled: 350 kms from Airlie Beach to Nebo via Bowenย

Visited: Bowen and Nebo

Stayed: Nebo CP, $5, S21.68651, E148.68832

Budget: 43 days @ $XX per day

It was a relatively short drive from Airlie to Bowen. We visited Bowen three years ago on our travels north, there are several CPs in the area but the Lighthouse CP next to the Bowen Pool has drawn us back again. As we did a post on Bowen back then, no point doing another but Iโ€™ve added some photos of our 9 night stay.

Our days are spent with a morning swim at the 50m heated pool, the water temperature is 27ยฐ and entry is free or a walk (maybe fishing) then cycling Bowenโ€™s cycle paths to the various beaches and lookouts. The evenings perhaps walking to one of the pubs or having mud crab or the local prawns at home in the Jayco.

Iโ€™m surprised how quickly my shoulder (post rotor cuff surgery) has loosened up swimming at Bowen. Easily back to 24 laps and feeling better than I can remember.

Unfortunately itโ€™s time to turn toward home and make our way south. Parking the Jayco outside the pool, we have a final swim and breakfast before departing Bowen. We plan returning to NSW on the inland route.

We soon turn off the Bruce Hwy just north of Mackay heading west through 60 kilometres of cane fields. The landscape then changes quickly to giant coal mines at the head of the Bowen Valley.

Nebo is a convenient stop between Bowen and Emerald on the Peak Downs Hwy. $5 for an unpowered site overnight seems very reasonable. At first glance itโ€™s little more than a village with a pub and post office but it has a huge dongas village on the edge of town and additional dongas tightly squeezed into once vacant blocks within the village. Obviously it existence continues due to the surrounding coal mines.

The CP is a first come best dressed affair and a bit of a shambles but the facilities are spotlessly clean and only a short walk to the pub.

We walk up to the pub as the drinking hour approaches to find a beer and a glass of wine is the princely price of $20. Based on that we reconsidered having a second round and dinner at the pub. The pub is rapidly filling with men in dirty fluro work-shirts so they donโ€™t need our business.

After a quiet evening back in the Jayco we walk the river trail in the morning before readying the Jayco for the road.
