Date: 31st May to 4th June 2024
Travelled: 200 kms from Maroochydore to Hervey Bay
Visited: Hervey Bay, QLD
Stayed: The Pier CP, Urangan $55, S25.28508, E152.90121
Budget: 14 days @ $XX per day
We roll out of Maroochydore into the traffic making our way for the Bruce Hwy. Maroochydore holds us as long as it can with a dozen or more traffic lights which in Queensland seem interminably slow. The rest of the drive north slows from Gympie when the Bruce stops being a duel carriageway.
Once we pass the big tyre in Gympie and a couple of heavy showers we turn for Hervey Bay.
Soon enough we arrive at The Pier CP in Urangan. Just to explain the City of Hervey Bay to use its official title is a series of villages that line the bay, being Hervey Bay. Urangan being the most eastern of the villages.
We soon settle in, have lunch with the local birdlife, some more charming than others.
With the bikes already unloaded we head off to see the sights. Uranganโs claim to fame is its 868 metre long pier which was originally 1124 metres before it fell into disrepair. It marks the dividing channel between Fraser Island and the mainland.
By the time weโve had an hours ride and gone out on the pier fishing we had decided Hervey Bay is our sort of place, so we tell the lady in the office weโll stay an extra few days.
Our days are taken up riding the cycle paths, fishing without a lot of success and chatting with our neighbours. The CP facilities are excellent.
Whilst Iโm trying my best to catch a squid, Pam finds the Botanical Garden on her morning walk.
Our final evening is spent having drinks with Keith and Judy from Mackay. Anyway we enjoyed Urangan and will plan on a week here next time we head north to escape the southern winter.

Certainly nice to see blue sky – even if it’s only in your photos ๐ . Cold & wet down here, so don’t plan to come back soon ๐
Friends of ours do the ‘great migration’ every year to Bowen in their van. Very windy there apparently.
