Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Ásbyrgi, Iceland 🇮🇸 2022

Date: 16th July 2022

Travelled: 110 kms from Pórshöfn to Ásbyrgi

Visited: Rauðanes and Raufarhöfn

Stayed: Camping Ásbyrgi, Isk3850, N66.02540, W16.49640

Budget: 52 days @ €96 per day

Once again we wake in the morning with new neighbours. Its seems much colder this morning in Pórshöfn and the wind has picked up. At 7am I turn on the heater and coffee machine and peer outside, except the half dozen tents scattered around us moving with the wind, it’s all quiet.

After coffee and fruit Pam heads off for a walk and I do a minor repair. Then we give the Hymer a vacuum before making ready for the road once again. We drive down to the service station and fill the Hymer with diesel at Isk340 @ litre (F**k that’s A3.20 litre).

Departing Pórshöfn it’s only 24 kms to Rauðanes our first stop. Our guide book highly recommends the 7kms walk around the Þistilfjördur peninsula.

The weather is threatening to be honest but the lure of puffins is stronger than common sense.

As regular readers are well aware Pam loves cliff walking

Some 6 kms later the track turns inland and we walk across the peninsula back to the Hymer. We never saw a sole the whole way, although two cars were in the carpark when we arrived and two different cars were there when we returned.

It’s a remarkable walk as the coastal formations constantly change, but for us the puffins add an extra dimension.

Back on the road once again we stop at a lay-by for lunch, it’s windy and freezing cold but the view is Iceland.

Its another 30 kms to Raufarhöfn and the Arctic Hedge. Even our guide book acknowledges that some towns create a hype to get visitors interested. The Arctic Hedge may be the perfect example. Raufarhöfn is some 24 kms off Route 85 on the 874 which until recently was a gravel road.

Our visit to Raufarhöfn done we return to Route 85 and continue westward to the campsite in the national park at Ásbyrgi. The place is chockers mostly with locals as it’s the summer school holidays after all.

Where lucky enough to get the last powered spot and settle in for the night, even though it won’t get dark.
