Reykjavik, Iceland 🇮🇸 2022

Date: 27th July 2022

Travelled: 70 kms from Reykjavik to Sandgerð

Visited:  Reykjavik  Þ  ð

Stayed: Camping Sandgerði, Isk5000, N64.03960, W22.69720

Budget: 63 days @ €106 per day

Reykjavik is a sprawling town of 200,000 people. Its suburbs spread 15 kms to the east and the drive in on route #1 a constant series of roundabouts the Hymer does not enjoy. The campsite is about 3 kms from the centrum.

Reykjavik, Höfuðborgarsvæðið, Iceland

By the time we arrived in Reykjavik and checked in to the campsite it was past 2 pm. The weather was very grey, but it was dry. After a short rest I unloaded the scooter ready for a trip into Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik.

Love the scooter, we are in the old Reykjavik parked outside the art gallery in less than 5 minutes, where the walk in would have taken half an hour. The scooter locked we go off to do some exploring.

Reykjavik has a big country town feel about it. There are no high-rise apartments or office blocks. Old Reykjavik is lots of cafes, restaurants and the odd bank. The further we go the more touristy we find it.

Eventually we find the Skolavörtonstigur and walk up the hill to Reykjavik’s Lutheran Church, the Hallgrimskirkja.

The church took 40 years to complete (1986) and its 74m high tower dominates the city, you catch glimpses of it from miles away. There’s a huge plinth with statue of Leifr (Lucky) Eiricsson standing on the forecourt.

Here’s an unusual fact, the backrest of the pews in this church move so you can face the altar or the organ, bit like a Sydney train. Anyway we’ve never seen that before.

We have walked here and there and find ourselves backtracking down rainbow street. Just when we thought we’ve done Reykjavik we stumble into the Drunk Rabbit an Irish pub. With the luck of the Irish we find it’s happy hour (which seemed to extend for quite a bit longer than an hour) and settled in. A pint of Guinness and a large chardy was Isk2100, which is quite reasonable if you’ve had a few.

We enjoy a couple of quiet pints with the locals when suddenly the bar fills with American’s asking silly questions (sorry Gloria) and the mood is lost.

It appears to have rained more than a little during our stop at the pub. We had intended having dinner in town tonight but given the rain has ceased it seems prudent to ride back to the Hymer whilst we can.

So 5 minutes later and still dry we are sitting in the Hymer having to deal with dinner, as the rain starts to tumble down. It doesn’t stop all night only easing at coffee time in the morning.

We had planned a couple of days in Reykjavik but the weather does, what the weather does.
