Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Seyðisfjörður, Iceland 🇮🇸 2022

Date: 14th July 2022

Travelled: 155 kms from Seyðisfjörður to Vopnafjörður

Visited: Seyðisfjörður and Vopnafjörður

Stayed: Camping Vopnafjörður, Isk3800, N65.7580, W14.82610

Budget: 51 days @ €93 per day

Our time in the Faroes done we load the Hymer back into the cargo hold of the MS Norrona, there are perhaps another 100 motorhomes or more in there, so the Hymer has company. Once settled in the cabin we walk the Norrona taking a last look at Tórshavn.

The first two hours of our cruise to Iceland was beautiful as the Norrona negotiated its way through the Faroe Islands heading north-west. But once we entered the open North Atlantic the remainder of the crossing was rough as the Norrona rocked up and down for most of the night.

At some stage in the early hours the seas dropped and everyone got some sleep. Around 8am the Norrona enters the 17km long fjord that ends in Seyðisfjörður. It’s a panoramic vista of mountains, waterfalls and ice caps in the distance. It’s much colder than the Faroes is my first impression.

Back in the Hymer we wait our turn to roll of the Norrona into Seyðisfjörður. We find a park easily enough have a much needed coffee and toast. That done we have a wander around before finding a supermarket for some essentials.

I should explain, the blurb from Symril Line (the ferry operator) states that motorhome fridges must be turned off during the passage. So rather than risk a fridge full of food going off we kept it to a minimum.

With a few snaps of Rainbow Street and Seyðisfjörður‘s Blue Church we roll out of town to start our Icelandic adventure. Egilsstaðir is our first planned stop but we spot a waterfall on the way and take a picture. Iceland is like Norway, if you stop at every waterfall you’ll never get anywhere.

We continue on the 36 kms to Egilsstaðir. Being a much larger town we head straight for a phone shop and purchase a couple of sims. Job done we set the GPS once again this time Borarfjördur Eystri. Our guide book states it has a large puffin colony and 70kms seems reasonable. Twenty klm on, the road has been dug up for some major refurbishment so we struggle on for 5kms of shaking the Hymer before we decide stuff the puffins and turn back.

So we return to Egilsstaðir have lunch and decide on plan B. The North-East Circuit is recommended in our guide book and our intended route, we’ll just do it a day earlier. We drive highway #1 for some 50 kms before turning north for Vopnafjörður.

Vopnafjordur, Austurland, Iceland

Vopnafjörður has a simple campsite overlooking the town. The view somewhat spoilt by the fishmeal factory, the town’s largest employer. Apparently the town is a famous salmon fishing destination for the wealthy. As usual we walk the village and take in the sites.

It’s been a longer day than we originally intended, following what could have been a better night’s sleep on the Norrona. Anyway we are in Iceland, ticking another one off the bucket list.
