Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Faroes Rap, Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 2022

Date: 10-12th July 2022

Travelled: 100 kms from Borðoy to Vágar then 60 kms back to Streymoy

Visited: Vágar and Torshavn back on Streymoy

Stayed: Camping Giljanes, DKK200, N62.04730, W07.16330

Budget: 48 days @ €93 per day

After 5 days of exploring the Faroes the weather brings everything to a stop. Having made our way back by ferry to Klaksvik on Borðoy we turn south for the undersea tunnel to Eysturoy.

We thought of heading north to Viðoy but the tunnels north through the mountains are only 3.1m high about the same height as the Hymer, so rather than taking a risk which is my normal option, we turn south.

It’s a relatively easy run but very expensive as there are three undersea tunnels on our route. The tunnel from Eysturoy to Steymoy being the longest at 11.5 kms, it features the worlds only undersea round-about. The picture below is thanks to Google, the lighting wasn’t working in some sections and the tunnels theme music which is supposed to be working on our FM radio wasn’t

By the time we’ve crossed the last tunnel i’ts late in the afternoon and the weather on Vágar is wet and windy. So we retreat to the only campsite on Vágar near Giljanes. Part of a youth hostel it was very ordinary to be truthful. The night passes noisily with young people coming and going and heavy rain at times.

Unfortunately we wake to a heavy mist and strong winds. Despite giving it a couple of hours to clear, it doesn’t and we drive off to explore Vágar anyway.

Vágar, Vatnsoyrar, Vága sýsla, Faroe Islands

We had plans to do a couple of longer walks here on Vágar today, but after finding Múllafossur Falls and not seeing too much it seems unlikely. It’s almost midday when we decide to return to Torshavn rather than spend another night in Giljanes.

Returning to Torshavn the mist has lifted a little but the wind is much stronger. Back in the campsite here once again we walk off into Tórshavn to do some exploring.

On a small hill overlooking the port entrance we find the Ryggi Fortress built in the 1630’s to protect the town from Turkish Pirates of all things. It was added to over the centuries, it was last manned by the British during WWII hence the British deck gun pictured below.

The rain returns and we retreat back to the campsite once again. The wind continues to build in strength and the Hymer rocks and sways all night. Come 3am the noise and movement make sleeping impossible, this continues on till mid morning when the wind gusts finally abate. I think I could safely say it was the worst night of wind we have experienced in our 9 years of motorhoming.

By early evening we brave the drizzle and walk into Torshavn for the last time, take a last couple of pictures and get a take away for dinner. We have some English neighbours tonight so we ask Sue and Steve in for a drink or two, chatting about each others travels.

Whilst the wind is still blowing it’s a breeze compared to last night so we get a good nights sleep.

Our final morning in Torshavn is mostly housekeeping, some shopping and filling with diesel. We take the Hymer down to the port and join the queue, having some lunch and relaxing.

We’ve really enjoyed our visit to the Faroes despite the weather over the last 36 hours. The wind has now all but gone and we get some glimpses of the sun…next stop Iceland.

Never saw any of these during our week in the Faroes.
