Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Vibørg, Denmark 2017 🇩🇰

Travelled: 132 kilometres from Jelling to Vibørg, both in Denmark.

Visited: Silkebørg and Vibørg

Stayed: Farm Stop Vibørg, DKK 75 included power and water. N56.46897 E09.34178  (CamperStop)

Our farm stop in Jelling is peaceful enough but we wake to the sound of rain on the roof of the Hymer.  There is still no one around when we are ready to go, so we put our hard earned krone in the envelope and head north.  We had plans to visit the lakes district of central Demark and cycle the paths around Silkebørg this morning.  At this stage it looks like we will drive the roads around the lakes instead.

Denmark

Driving the lakes to Silkebørg in the drizzle.
We stop at a small campsite to service the Hymer and take a picture of the lake.
Shortly after we arrive in Silkebørg and find a paid parking spot. We walk a short distance to the square and find the old Town Hall
Apparently it’s market day and the big cheese is in town !
The big cheese has the longest queues !

We stop and listen for a while noting for a second time the a jazz band set up in the square seems to be an excuse for some pre-lunch beer drinking.  The mood is mellow.

Across the square the church is less popular than the beer stalls, but where not here to drink beer. Or so Pam informs me.
The interior of the Silkebørg Kirke is elegant and simple. The pews look new and even smell new. Looks like it recently had a makeover.
We walk back to the Hymer after picking up a loaf of bread. Thought this was an interesting space.

Anyway our cycle ride around the lake district will have to wait until our next visit.  The weather hasn’t changed, better to drive in the rain that sit in a wet carpark.  So we drive north again this time to Vibørg.

Denmark

Well we find a parking place on a roof top carpark of all places and head off for a walk.  We follow the crowd along what appears to be the main street.
We eventually find Vibørg Cathedral (Dom).  It was King ‘Harold the Bluetooth’, son of King ‘Gorm the Old’ who laid the first stone for the original church on this site.
But we cannot enter the Cathedral, looks like a wedding or something as the doors are closed.  Thought this bronze door was an interesting design.
This house is just down the laneway from the Dom. A magnificent example of it’s time and very well maintained as well.  The Dane’s appear to be very houseproud people, garden’s tended, fresh paint etc.
Kinky ?
A typical laneway around the Cathedral in Vibørg.
Another streetscape of Vibørg.  By this stage we feel we have entered ‘the twilight zone’, we flip the coin, an impending nuclear attack or perhaps free beer at the other end of town.
Pam meets an old client from work.  This small square had a series of bronze street art figures.  It was the only place we actually saw a few people.

So we walk back to the Hymer.  A local sees the Australian flag (sticker on the Hymer) and comes over for a chat, he has a sister in Melbourne and we chat about travel and Denmark.  He gives us some handy hints about parking before we say our goodbyes and we head off for a farm stay about 5 klm from town.

We find ourselves parked up with another motorhome from The Netherlands. It’s a beautiful spot and as usual the sun comes out about 7pm, so it’s BBQ chicken tonight.
