It’s a lovely sunny morning in Vik. Still it’s cool as we head off for a walk, we are in Iceland after all. Our guide book makes a fuss about the hilltop church here in Vik so we’re off to have a look. So we walk up the hill to the Vik Church (circa 1928), like most churches in Iceland it’s locked except on Sundays.
The church also provides some fabulous views of Vik and its black sand coast.
An hour later, the Hymer is serviced and we return to route #1 eastbound. Whilst it’s a scenic drive it’s going to be a long driving day. Generally we have the Vatnajökull Icecap somewhere in view the entire day, not surprising given its size (7,200 sq/km).
We seem to have left a lot of traffic and tourist coaches back at Vik as well.
Miles and miles of lava field and numerous bridges. As the morning passes we find many of the bridges are now narrow single lane, often requiring a stop for oncoming traffic.
Our first stop of the day is just 3 kms of the ringroad, Fjaðrárglfúfur is a 2 km long canyon carved out by the river Fjaðrá. We drive up to the top carpark and walk the canyon.
Between Vik and Höfn there is only one campsite and on reflection I was sorry we didn’t break for the day there. The afternoon drive on to Höfn is long and at times slow. But you cannot say it boring.
Our next stop is the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón. The icebergs here calve from Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, part of the Vatnajökull Icecap. The panel tells us the icebergs stay in the lagoon for up to 5 years, refreezing in winter and thawing in summer until there small enough to make there way down river a km to the sea.
Its something to experience and despite the cold we linger and take in the vista.
Hofn, Austurland, Iceland
We finally arrive in Höfn, probably an hour or so later than we normally like to be booked in and settled but not to worry, the campsite, whilst expensive has a nice aspect and the village of Höfn looks promising for a day off the road tomorrow.

Thanks for your comment, the credit goes to Apple’s iPad key board that recognises a sustained touch and gives vowel options for foreign language, for example äáàâæåãā smart people aren’t they. So glad you and Joy are enjoying our blogs. Our tour of Iceland is coming to an end in a couple of days then back on the ferry to Denmark once again.
