We wake to the Hymer rocking in the wind, as it’s dark outside it must be after 11pm and before 4am. The large hatch is rattling so I get up and close it, get back into bed for a few minutes before the rain starts on the roof, I get up again and close the other hatches then back to bed once again. Such is life on the road.
It’s still raining come breakfast so our planned walk to explore the Danewerks, Germany’s version of Hadrian’s wall isn’t looking good. We get the Hymer ready for the road, say goodbye to our neighbours Mad’s and Annette from England and roll out of the stellplatz.
First task of the day is to fill the LPG tanks, before leaving Germany, the second a visit to Lidl to top up our beer and wine stocks. That done we make for the A7 and Denmark.

As we arrive at the Danish border we are surprised to see a checkpoint. They appear to be scanning number plates and pulling out the odd vehicle for inspection. The Hymer is obviously overloaded with German beer but, they just wave us through.

The drive to Ribe takes the best part of two hours including a coffee stop. Once off the freeway the general speed limit seems to be 80 kph which makes for a scenic drive through the farmlands of southern Jutland.
Ribe, Region Syddanmark, Denmark
Ribe has a free stop close to town with services but it’s apparently very popular. The stellplatz is already full when we arrive, so we turn into the overflow in a gravel lot across the road. Ten minutes later someone leaves and we have our spot.
Ribe is one of the oldest if not the oldest settlements in Denmark. Dated back to 700 AD it hailed the start of the Viking era. It was the home of the Danish Kings until a fire destroyed the town in 1580 and the royal family moved to Copenhagen never to return. You can read about its history in the link above.
Anyway we are here in Ribe on a cool and drizzly afternoon and that looks unlikely to change for the rest of the day, so we get the Gortex out and dig deep into the cupboard to find an umbrella before going for a walk.

We argue the toss about waffles and ice cream, then decide well come back into town in the early evening for dinner and desert if the weather breaks. Unfortunately it doesn’t, so it’s atlantic salmon and salad in the Hymer tonight with a Lidl sweet fruit roll for desert.
