Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Rendsburg, Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2022

Date: 24th June 2022

Travelled: 45 kms from Neumรผnster to Rendsburg, Germany

Visited: Rendsburg

Stayed: Rendsburg Wohnmobil Haven, โ‚ฌ17, N54.30420, E09.65620

Budget: 30 days @ โ‚ฌ101 per day

After our swim we have a proper breakfast this morning. Using the last of our Dutch bacon, itโ€™s sliced so thinly like a piece of paper. Obviously that makes it heart healthy. Pam has an egg, the shells are pure white here, something we havenโ€™t seen in Aus for donkeys.

Thinking a short drive would be nice, we set the GPS for Rendsburg. It stands between the River Eider and the Osterr Canal in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany.

Rendsburg doesnโ€™t rate a mention in our guide but our P4Night app talks about a transporter bridge, so I do a little Googling to confirm it before we go. Itโ€™s less than a 40 minute drive.

The Rendsburg High Bridge was completed in 1913. The bridge spans the Kiel Canal although the map calls this section of the canal the Osterr. The upper section of the bridge carries the rail line, it spans 2500 m. The lower section carries the gondola or Schwebefรคhre across the 140 m between roadways. It runs every 15 minutes, it has a maximum vehicle weight of 3.5 tonne which we could just scrape through, but the queue means we would need to wait another 30 minutes to get across. So we drive around on the road bridge into Rendsburg and the stellplatz on the other side of the canal.

The stellplatz is full except for a spot next to the facilities. Itโ€™s already getting hot and the forecast is 30ยฐ today given thereโ€™s no shade and the rail and transporter seem fairly noisy we move on.

There is another stellplatz in town so we move on. It proves to be a good choice, plenty of space, some shade as the sun swings around and the altstadt just a short walk away.

So we lunch, turn on the AC and relax. 90 minutes later the awning is flapping and its obvious a storm is coming. It belts down rain for some 30 minutes before clearing once again. Much cooler to explore Rendsburg now, so off we go.

The rain appears to have scared everyone away. We walk the street and markt places for an hour, many of the shops are still open but we only see the odd group walking around mostly eating ice cream. We stumble upon a Chinese restaurant on our way back and get a takeaway for dinner tonight. Not sure what we ordered but Google translate gave it the nod.

Walking back into the stellplatz we have some new neighbours with UK plates. So we stop and introduce ourselves. One thing leads to another, the chairs come out as do the drinks. Time gets away, the gin+tonics flow as does the beer. Damn glad we got the takeaway, as cooking something at 9.30 wasnโ€™t going to happen.

Gerry and Harvey from Oxford, he tells us heโ€™s working from home. He tells us no one has noticed home is now in Germany and last week in was Denmark.
