Bribie Island, Queensland 🇦🇺 2021

We say our goodbyes to Jenny and Dave before rolling out of Glen Villa and departing Byron Bay. As we leave NSW this morning, Pam is keen to hit the local return and earn and collect her $2 before crossing into Queensland.

We have a few other chores to do today. Firstly we drive to Burleigh Heads to inspect a unit our daughter has made an offer on. That done we continue on north on the M1 to Arundel. We booked the Jayco into the Iveco Dealer on the Gold Coast a few days ago to get a spare key coded and to replace a broken mirror lens. Arriving, it all goes well until a mechanic points out the duels on the near side are going down. Bugger ! Long story short the key is coded, the mirror replaced and we replace two tyres.

All that drama aside, we return to the M1 and head south, turning this time for Tallebudgera. Frank and Tina have invited us for drinks and dinner, they tell us their now unused tennis court is a level place to park our Jayco. We met on a small group tour of India a few years ago, so it‘s a catch up evening and some memories of our mutual travels. The most inspiring part was meeting Tina’s Nonna, an amazing 97 and going strong.

We dodge the cane toads making our way back to the Jayco after a lovely dinner.

On the M1 again continuing north toward Brisbane. The traffic is chaotic heading north and often congested to the point of being stationary heading south. Quite amazing given the M1 is 3-4 lanes from the border to Brisbane. The traffic thins as we near the Gateway Bridge in Brisbane and the rest of the trip to Bribie a pleasant drive.

Being 34 kms long and 8 kms wide Bribie Island is the smallest of the three major sand islands that flank Moreton Bay. Our friends Kris and Rob have just started building a house here and we thought we should have a look at the place. Apparently Bribie is a Mecca for retirees from south-east Queensland. We cross the bridge from Sandstone Point to Bongaree on the south west corner of the island. Bongaree is the largest town on the Island with a large shopping complex. So we pop in and stock up before continuing on to Woorim on the east coast.

The shadows are getting longer as we head off to explore Woorim. It seems very quiet on this side of Bribie, Woorim is a much smaller town, more like a village.

We walk around 4 klms along the beach and around Woorim before making our way back to the campsite. After a number of extravagant nights out in Byron, Pam is keen to get the budget back on track. So we eat in and watch another episode of Mr Mercedes, which is getting even more disturbing.

After our usual coffee and fruit we unload the bikes and ride off to explore the cycle path across the island. It’s a relatively safe ride as the cycleway is dedicated most of the way. Fourteen klms later we are back at the Jayco packing up to depart.
