Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Woomera, South Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 2025

Date: 26th August 2025

Travelled: 380 kms from Cooper Pedy to Woomera

Visited: Woomera

Stayed: Shoreline CP Port Augusta, $41.50 pn, S32.47480, E137.76290

Escaping Cooper Pedy we drive south with strong gusting cross winds virtually all day. Between the road trains carrying ore sometimes up to 5 trailers and those taking cows on holidays itโ€™s not relaxing.

We have a couple of overnight options in mind but after 320 kilometres the free camp overlooking Lake Hart wins. We slide into the almost full area and get one of the last places next to a huge bus converted into a motorhome. It provides something of a windbreak.

The wind has dropped overnight but itโ€™s a beanie walk this morning as we walk down across the railway line and follow the shoreline of Lake Hart. The pink hue of the lake last evening is confirmed by the thick layer of salt along the shoreline.

There is still significant evidence of what was a thriving salt extraction industry here in 1931.

By the time weโ€™ve returned to the Jayco our overnight campsite has emptied out and the big bus is turning onto the highway. After breakfast we do the same.

Another 60 kilometres and we turn off the Stuart for RAAF Base Woomera.

There is a large outdoor display of aircraft and rockets as well as indoor museums. The outdoor displays are beautifully maintained although some information panels were missing.

At the height of the Cold War Woomera was a major Anglo Australian research facility, some 7,000 people lived and worked here. The village and base are a time capsule of the 1960โ€™s and remind me of RAAF Richmond growing up as a kid.

Inside lots of information panels and bits of what made Woomera tick.

Woomera done we continue south for another 200 kilometres to Port Augusta and hopefully the delivery of a new rear vision assembly.
