Sadly another wonderful trip to Wildhill concludes and we head south to put the Hymer into storage and make our way to Gatwick. We spend the afternoon and evening with Pam’s cousin Anne doing a little sightseeing before dinner at her local. We overnight at the Yotel at Gatwick. Our flight and transfer have us in our hotel in Rome well before lunch.
Our hotel is the Okapi Rooms a little place recommended in the travel section of the Telegraph 6 months ago. Very small but very well located. We spend the next 2 days here and there enjoying Rome. The Scavi Tour under the Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Palentine Hill and the Ari Pacis were highlights.
Italy
On Thursday morning we transfer to Civitavicha and the Celebrity Silhouette. Our stateroom is large with a great view. The Silhouette is only 2 years old, everything looks brand new.
Our first port of call is Naples and our little group heads of to explore the Pompeii excavations. This was very interesting morning looking at life in 79 AD. By lunchtime it’s hot and dusty and we head back to the Silhouette for some pool time. In the late afternoon we have a wander around old Naples. The whole area was dirty, with graffiti everywhere, so don’t bother.
Our second port of call is Valetta in Malta. A most beautiful place, well kept, clean and tidy. We spend the day wandering the cobbled streets, sightseeing and finding a little bar for some local flavor. I think about all those Maltese kids we went to school with back in the 60’s. I would have been homesick too. Pam and I decide Malta is definitely worth a longer visit.
Sunday is a sea day and a little resting around the pool is just what we need after a week of looking around ancient ruins. Each day the temperature increases and tomorrow in Athens it’s 31c.
