Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Flauenskjold, Denmark 2017 🇩🇰

Travelled: 147 kilometres from Vibørg to Flauenskjold in Northern Denmark.

Visited: Vibørg again and Hobro

Stayed: Municipal stellplatz in Flauenskjold, all services DKK50 without power. N57.24778 E10.28383 (CamperContact)

Our hosts in Vibørg were such nice people.  Giving us a local tourist brochure and a few hints.  After dinner Pam notes there is a new swimming centre in Vibørg and asks would I like to have a swim in the morning ?  Back in Sydney we are both keen swimmers and like to do a kilometre 2-3 times a week if possible.  In addition we have been told we must see the murals in the Cathedral, so it looks like our visit will be extended for a few hours.

I decide not to take a picture of the swim centre as its raining, but it is new and very flash.  The lap pool is only 25 metres, so it’s 40 laps to the kilometre.  The centre has spa and sauna facilities as well.  Entry is DKK37pp which is a fair bit more than Sans Souci pool.  It also has lots of rules and lots of doors, each door has its own set of rules labeled with a flag 🇬🇧 , just incase you didn’t know you could read English 🇬🇧.

As Pam has a thing about not exposing her feet to tinea, and insisted on wearing her thongs through the 5 door entry process, she failed and had to go back to door 2 and re-start.  I was only half surprised to see her finally exit door 5 wearing her training flippers…

After Pam has washed her hair and broken several other rules, she is escorted out of the pool by security and we make the short drive to the Cathedral.

Panorama of the Cathedral from rear of the grounds. The front has a carpark full of cars.
The relatively plain exterior of the Cathedral is quickly forgotten once you enter.
Part of the ceiling in the central nave of the Cathedral.
The murals in the apse of the Cathedral
The dome above the crossing is busy with the Apostles.
The aisles on either side are also adorned with murals, predominantly stories of the New Testament but Adam and Eve find a spot as well.
Woman, can get you into trouble. So I have been told.  By the way all the murals were painted by Joakim Skovgaard between 1900 and 1913.

So we have done Vibørg twice, but enjoyed the second part so much more.  We certainly are grateful to our hosts at the Farm Stay for recommending the Cathedral.   The rain has stopped as we head north again to our next planned stop, Hobro.  Situated in Northern Jutland Hobro is about 50 klm away.  We lunch in a rest spot, making a leasurely trip of it.  Near Hobro is Fyrkat a 10th century Viking fortress or whats left of it.

What we find is a few old buildings, apparently constructed in the Viking longhouse style, some of which, are in a bad state of repair.

We have a bit of a wander about before deciding we really don’t want to pay DKK75pp to look any further.  Maybe it was the long swim but more likely the tourist trap look of the place but we decided to keep our krone and continue on.  We have decided on a ferry to Sweden tomorrow, so we drive on to find a stellplatz near the port of Frederikshaven.

The stellplatz at Flauenskjold ticks the boxes. It has all the usual service, the wifi works and its less than 30 minutes to the ferry. So we park up for the night.
