Itโ€™s only a short drive upstream from Cahills Crossing to the boat ramp and dock on the East Alligator. The blurb tells us Guluyambi Cultural Cruise is an 1 hour and 45 minutes. We all climb aboard, our guide tells us where the life jackets are but strongly advises swimming to the nearest bank and getting out of the water wouldl be his priority.

Our guide Jimmy is a funny guy. He tells us he lives 12 kilometres on the Arnhem Land side of the East Alligator and travels across the causeway at Cahills every day for 5 months of the year. When the wet starts he and the rest of his community are isolated in Arnhem.

We quickly find out all the big crocodiles arenโ€™t back at Cahills Crossing hoping to eat some idiot fishing, there here catching some rays. Jimmy seems to have a name for most of them telling us the old crocs have there own bit of bank and pity help any other croc who invades his space.

Jimmy talks about this and that as we go. What tree branch makes for a spear or throwing stick. Why the bull sharks are more of a worry than the crocodiles.

Suddenly the river opens widely and the landscape changes. Up stream the East Alligator reminds me of the Hawkesbury and water skiing except for the crocodiles and sharks.

Jimmy eventually landed the boat on the Arnhem Land side of the river and takes us all on a bit of a nature walk on his country around a billabong, he throws a few spears and chats about his brother who loves burning off this time of year.

Then we turn back and motor back to towards Cahills, but just for a bonus, we spot a bull shark on the bank of the river. It has obviously been bitten by something. Then an adolescent croc about a metre long, Jimmy tells us they get darker as they age. All that lazing on the East Alligator catching rays I suppose.

Anyway we had a great time.
