Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Eysturoy, Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 2022

Date: 8th July 2022

Travelled: 80 kms around Eysturoy, Faroes

Visited: Eiði, Gjógv, Funningur and Fuglafjørður

Stayed: Camping Fuglafjørður, DKK150, N62.24170, W06.81560

Budget: 44 days @ €96 per day

No wonder they chain the caravans down in Tjørnuvík, the wind rocks the Hymer most of the night. Frankly we were so tired it wasn’t really a problem.

Back on the road once again turning south we make for the bridge from Streymoy to Eysturoy at NorðSkala. Once across Eysturoy we turn north and follow the coast road.

As you can see from the picture below we get another fabulous view of Fossá Falls, this time from the other side of the fjord.

Our first stop of the day is the town of Eiði on the north-west tip of Eysturoy. Famous for its sea stacks, the Giant and the Witch which we saw yesterday from Tjørnuvík. The village sits in the shadow of Slattaratindur, the Faroes highest mountain.

Nice view of the stack as we take the tourist route across to Gjógv.

As we drive down into Gjógv we find a small carpark on the edge of the village and follow the stream into town. Our Princess Mary of Denmark visited Gjógv in 2005 sitting on a wooden bench to take in the view. That old bench is now ‘Mary’s Chair’ and something of a drawcard. Gjógv is also unique in that it has the only natural harbour in the Faroes.

From Gjógv we backtrack along the tourist drive before once again turning south following the east coast of Eysturoy this time. Our tourist booklets recommendation we detour a few kms down to the tiny village of Funningur. There not much there except one of the Faroes most photographed churches. The Church of Funningur (circa 1847) is picture below, it was closed.

From Funningur it’s a 20 minute drive on to Fuglafjørður. There are only two campsite on Eysturoy and one of them is on the marina at Fuglafjørður. It’s been a long drive so where glad to call it a day. Surprisingly a Swiss motorhome joins us for company.

Fuglafjørður is a relatively large industrial town by Faroe standards, certainly not a tourist destination in our opinion, but the stop has good facilities and it’s on the way.
