Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Windsor Castle, England ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง 2022

Date: 28th May 2022

Travelled: 27 kms from Sunbury-on-Thames to Windsor Castle, Berkshire County.

Visited: Windsor Castle

Stayed: The Red Lion (Pub), free, N51.77233, W01.23752

Budget: 3 days @ $ very expensive per day.

Its a beautiful morning once again, but thereโ€™s still a chill in the air. Pam goes off for an early morning walk whilst I tighten the clamp on the drain line from the kitchen sink. Just a tiny drip but hopefully now itโ€™s fixed.

We have breakfast and make ready for the road. Itโ€™s a relatively short drive to Windsor but the GPS manages to find us a plethora of roundabouts on our way.

Why Windsor Castle, well it the largest and oldest occupied fortress in the world. Established by William the Conqueror in 1070. Extended and rebuilt many time itโ€™s EIIR favourite residence and sheโ€™s here today, so another one off the bucket list.

A quick Google and we have the co-ordinates for a large vehicle car-park close to the Castle at ยฃ5.50 for 3 hours.

Windsor, England, United Kingdom

Safely in the carpark with a couple of other motorhomes we head off hoping for a glimpse of you know whoโ€ฆ

We have booked our tickets on line for ยฃ28.50, the main advantage is we get a fast track and avoid the queue which was gaining momentum. Armed with our audio guides we head off exploring. Just to be clear there are no photos allowed inside the Castle, which is a shame but it helps keep this blog a bit shorter.

Pam spent considerable time getting just the right outfit to match the hat and practice a curtsey or two.

Having followed our audio guide through the Castleโ€™s State Apartments, a series of spectacularly rooms and furnishings we walk back down to St Georgeโ€™s Chapel circa 1475 where your know who, married you know who only a few years ago. The whole tour is excellent and the chapel is just beautiful.

So thatโ€™s it Windsor Castle is done in 2.5 hours, with Charlesโ€™ PoW dulcet tones providing much of the audio commentary. Well worth the effort and cost as far as we are concerned. We slowly make our way back to the Hymer, the town has now filled with visitors and the pubs and cafes are doing a roaring business.

We say goodbye to the relatively expensive car-park in Windsor and continue north-west to Oxford a further 80 kms away. We fall back on an old favourite, the Red Lion at Old Marston for the night. Itโ€™s a free to stop as long as you use the pub, so itโ€™s not really free but it has a large grassed area up the back and a beer is a beer.
