Date: 11th February 2022
Travelled: 115 kms from Cradle Mountain to Zeehan, Tasmania.
Visited: Cradle Mountain NP, Rosebery and Zeehan
Stayed: Zeehan Golf Club Camp, $10, S41.88882, E145.32447
Budget: 14 days @ $0 per day.
We arrived at Lake Gairdner camp last night to another very social evening. We had met Rick and Lisa from Queensland during our stop in Burnie a few days ago so it was like long lost friends re-uniting.
So we sit by the lake once again watching the platypus swim by and the echidna walking by and chatting about our day.
We are up early have a coffee, and some fruit hitting the road at 8am. By 9am we are parked in the Cradle Mountain NP, had a full breakfast got dressed for a hike and secured our bus tickets for Ronnieโs.
Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, Australia
The weather forecast is sunny and 18ยฐ but there is a wind chill and itโs definitely a jackets morning. There is no waiting for a bus this morning and we get straight on and disembark 15min later at Ronnieโs. Ronnieโs is the start of the 6 day overland track but weโll only walk it for 30 minutes before turning for Crater Lake.
The walk up to Crater Lake from the valley is relatively steep but mostly timber steps and boardwalks.
The track steepens as we walk up towards Marions. No more steps just rocks.
We make our way back to Dove Lake and the bus back to the Jayco. Enjoy a coffee and hit the road once again.
The amount of road kill in Tasmania is a little disturbing, thought this was a crow on the road initially but managed to stop, and wait until this echidna made the verge.
We stop at the village of Rosebery to service the Jayco and have a little look around. It seems the mine is the only thing to keep the pub and IGA going.
Zeehan, Tasmania, Australia
Probably had enough driving for today, but thereโs no free stop in Rosebery so we continue on another 30kms to Zeehan finding a patch of gravel adjacent to the golf club good enough for the night. The following photos are from our next morning walk around Zeehan.

Hi Michael and Pam,
Have been reading your blog with much interest as Tasmania is our next planned trip. But first I must finish building the Sprinter Van that will be our next motor home. About 3/4 of the way with the end in site. Keep up the great blogs and safe travels. Cheers Ewout
Thanks for your response. Hope you and Jenny are well.
Had dinner at Mark and Murielโs place in Melbourne last December. Mark said you were busy working on a new motorhome. The Jayco is a real handful particularly in western Tassie, I think it would be perfect in the Sprinter. I hope the build all goes well, your a pretty handy guy by all accounts so we sure it will tick the boxes you think a priority.
Hopefully we will get to SA in the next 12 months, weโll be sure to look you both up when we do.
