Travelled: 230 kilometres from Yeppoon to Clairview
Visited: Capricorn Caves and Clairview, Queensland.

Budget:
We depart Yeppoon returning to the Bruce Hwy and continue north. 15 kms later we turn for Capricorn Caves. The caves are within the Berserker Mountain Range, which look more like a series of low hills that rise sharply from the surrounding countryside.
We arrive at the caves, which are just up the road from the village called The Caves. Tickets for the cathedral tour for the two of us are $58.50. Obviously I didnโt tell Pam and I hope she doesnโt read this blog. To make matters worse we find ourselves with 6 ill mannered children.
The cave tour was informative but the cave itself a little underwhelming. Being a dry cave system there is much less colour in the formations. Most of the formations are cave coral rather than stalagmites. Despite the best effort of our guide and little or no effort by their parents the children repeatedly touch the formations and ran off in different directions, tended to spoil the experience in our opinion.
So we return to the road once again.

It seems Queensland is a forest of road side billboards. Must be a money spinner for the roads department, just visual pollution from our perspective.
We drive on another 100kms to Marlborough turning off the main road to find a park for a coffee. In a small park in what proved to be a small village, we find this memorial to two local young men killed in actions during the Vietnam War. Just click either of the photos above for details.
Another 100 kms later we catch a glimpse of Clairview and its sweeping views across Broad Sound.

We find a parking spot near the CWA stall and Pam springs from the Jayco and disappears inside coming back with some homemade raspberry jam and beetroot relish. We take in the view for a few minutes before deciding we have had enough of the Bruce Highway for the day. We passed a campsite on the edge of the village so back to Barracrab Caravan Park it is.
After having a look at the facilities on offer we decide on an un-powered site which is not really a site more of a just go and park wherever you like type of arrangement.
It appears everyone other than us is here to bag Barra and drop a few crab pots in the shallows. After settling in, which takes only a few minutes, we have a drink with our late lunch. We consider a swim but the manager tells us to have a good look around for crocks before we go in. So buckleyโs chance of getting Pam within 50 metres of the water after that.
The Barracrab does however have bar restaurant arrangement where your 4WD fishing types hang out and knock over 10-12 XXXX cans and discuss the one that got away. We risk it for dinner and have a fabulous local barramundi chips and salad. I wanted to fit in, but couldnโt make myself order a XXXX, so a great northern it was. The lady behind the bar offers me a foam beer cooler to save me some embarrassment.
So that was our day.

We agree with uncontrolled children spoiling a tour – we went on a tour at the Undara Caves on the Savannah Way – we needed to book in advance, sight unseen and we ended up with more children than adults – most children were under 5 and on a 3 hour walking tour – don’t think the parents gave it too much thought – totally spoiled the tour.
