Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Castle Ward, Northern Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง 2019

Date: 7th July 2019

Travelled: 40 kilometres Strangford to Newcastle, both in County Downs

Visited: Castle Ward

Stayed: Newcastle waterfront car-park, free no service N54.20326, W05.89138

Budget: 35 days @ โ‚ฌ75 per day

We enjoyed a quiet evening on the quay at Strangford. The ferry runs every 30 minutes till 11pm but we didnโ€™t hear it after 9pm. There is a French motorhome across the way and two yuppies in a 1970 VW Combi (hired) nearby.

Our view of Strangford whilst having coffee. Looks like another beautiful day.

Pam wants a walk and the LP recommends walking the Squeeze Gut so we head of to find it…

We found it, Pam fits through OK.

An hour later we are back in the Hymer and heading for the Castle Ward Estate, itโ€™s only 7 kms away. Another National Trust entry ยฃ9.50pp.

The house doesnโ€™t open until 1pm, so we set off to walk one of the recommended trails. I should add, Castle Ward was a regular backdrop for filming the Game of Thrones. There are several plaques and a special Game of Thrones Tour that runs here.

A view of the house or mansion on the hill.

The walk takes us 90 minutes, up and down dale. Back in the Hymer we have a cool down and lunch before visiting the house. You can click any of these and they should open in a gallery.

Pam wants one of these for Taren Point.

Itโ€™s mid-afternoon and time to move on. We check out an overnight spot on the estuary near Dundrum and we find another familiar view.

We have driven for almost 5 weeks around Ireland, to arrive in Newcastle and find the biggest traffic jam. Newcastle is a very touristy town full of games arcades and mini-carnivals. It takes us 30 minutes to drive a kilometre.

Safely sitting in our little car-park overlooking the Irish Sea.
