We depart Lubeck around mid-day and the traffic is a shocker.  It takes us 30 minutes to get out of town and onto the autobahn.  Once there it’s an easy drive south-east toward Schwerin.  Lubeck was as far north in Germany we get this year and our travels will be mostly southerly from now on.

Turning off the autobahn for Schwerin we pass several small villages before driving in this small campsite on the banks of the Ostorfer See or Lake Ostorfer for those who don’t speak Deutsche.  Schwerin is surrounded by several large freshwater lakes.  It’s a quaint little place, room for about 20 motorhomes.  It has a little bar and shop and you can hire a peddle-boat if you so desire.

Our spot in the trees in this little stellplatz. Our German neighbours are a very nice couple, he was a coal miner who was retrenched following the German governments decision to stop coal mining. According to him they closed all the German coal mines to appear environmentally friendly, but then imported the coal from Poland instead.  He wasn’t happy about being forced to retire.
We ride into Schwerin, it’s about 2 kilometres from our stellplatz around the shores of the lake. To our surprise we find this Schloss (castle) on a small island in the middle of the Burgsee or city lake.  Unfortunately somewhat spoilt by the bloody crane.
We pay our admission and visit this magnificent castle and museum. A castle has existed on this site since the 947. The existing castle was built in the 14th century.   However it was extensively renovated in the 18th century to its current style.  Remaining the seat of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg until 1918 and the inevitable collapse of the German Empire.  By the way this is ‘The Throne Room’.
Just a little something keep in mind, the letter W is pronounced V in German.  So if you ask about Schwerin and you don’t want an odd look as a response, it’s Schverin.  Still in the Schloos museum, we continue our tour.  Most information panels included an ‘English’ version, but the English audio guide added perceptive as well as detail.
Out of the museum we ride up into the altstadt, park the bikes and walk around. Whilst there are lots of newer building, there are gems like this little shop of curios, the lintel dated 1698.
The Dom (or cathedral) as it locally known, built in the 14th Century to the Gothic northern German, red brick style. Very similar to Lubecks’ St. Mary’s. It was impossible to get a better photo as the square was full of marques.  Just a little more trivia, in France or Spain they set up for food markets on the weekends.  In Germany it’s always a beer market.
Bloody crane, would have been a nice photo. After heading home for a late lunch and rest, we venture out about 4pm to ride the lakes.  It’s a 20 kilometre ride, around three of the seven lakes and back to the campsite.  The is an open air concert at the Schloos this evening and we have some nice music whilst we ride.
