Standley Chasm, Northern Territory ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 2025

Date: 15th August 2025

Travelled: 100 kms to the Chasm and back

Visited: Standley Chasm

Stayed: Gโ€™Day Mate CP, $46, S23.73330, E133.86777

We make our way to the aquatic centre in town for a swim this morning. Fabulous facility but the 50 m pools is closed for winter but the 25 m indoor is open, so its 56 laps this morning. $4.70 pp entry.

A quick breakfast in the carpark and where on our way to Standley Chasm. Itโ€™s less that 50 kilometres from Alice and a beautiful drive with views of the McDonald Ranges.

The chasm entry is a kilometre or so off the main road. Finding a spot in the long vehicle carpark we walk to the entry point and pay the $10 pp (seniors). If your wondering about the name the chasm was named in honour of Ida Standley, the areas first school teacher.

Weโ€™ve arrived at midday which is the recommended time to visit. From the pay point itโ€™s a leisurely kilometre walk up the creek bed to the start of the chasm. The chasm run north-south so around midday the sun can penetrate and illuminates the colours of the rock walls.

There are quite a few people milling around within the chasm itself, mostly people looking for the perfect photo like us. The cliffs on either side tower 80 metres over the creek bed and the colours are spectacular.

A highlight of the creek walk is the flora, much more variety and colour than that on display at the botanic gardens back in Alice.

Anyway Standley Chasm is done, definitely a highlight of our tour of Alice Springs so far. Weโ€™re out for dinner tonight with Pamโ€™s cousin Anne from Blighty. More on Alice next blog.
