Darwin, Part 1, Northern Territory ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 2025

Date: 24-26th July 2025

Travelled: 260 kms from Jabiru to Darwin

Visited: Darwin Museum and Gallery and Military Museum

Stayed: Lee Point Resort CP, $62, S12.66613, E132.83534

Having had our first visit to Darwin off the Zuiderdam a few months ago here we are again twice in one year.

We escape Jabiru on the Arnhem Highway but set the GPS for Mount Bundey rather than Darwin. The Bark Hut Roadhouse has great reviews and we feel in need of a night out after Kakadu.

The Bark Hut was $46 a night with power and water, not a bargain but that seems like the going rate at most places in 2025. We have a nice spot in the shade and run the A/C as revenge.

As we come into Darwinโ€™s outer suburbs some 15 kilometres from the CBD is easy to see how Darwin has grown along the Stuart Highway.

Our first stop is Thrifty to pick up a rental car for the duration of our stay, then on to Lee Point Resort CP. Why a car ? Darwin has no real public transport system other than the odd bus route and most things we are interested in visiting are scattered.

Settled in the shade at Lee Point we drive to the pool at Casuarina Aquatic Centre for our laps. After breakfast we head into town for our first tourist stop, Darwin Museum and Gallery (free).

Apart from lots of space dedicated to local artists, the museum has an area dedicated to Cyclone Tracy which struck Darwin on Christmas 1974. That exhibition alone was well worth the visit.

After the museum we take the coastal path along Fannie Bay for a leg stretch. The water looks very tropical blue the shoreline less so.

Next morning more laps, then Darwinโ€™s Military Museum ($15) at East Point for a wander. The audio visual exhibition inside the museum is heavily focused on the bombing of Darwin in 1942. It was very interesting and worth a visit, the outside displays less so.

So thatโ€™s our first couple of days in Darwin. The weather sunny with broken cloud, 30ยบ every day so far, dropping to 25ยบ overnight,
