Travelled: 220 kms from Pine Creek to Jabiru
Visited: Jabiru, Cahills Crossing
Stayed: Anbinik Kakadu CP, $62, S12.66613, E132.83534
After enjoying our walk around Pine Creek we make ready for the road once again. Filling with fuel as itโs a long detour from the Stuart out to Jabiru and then on north towards Darwin. Almost as soon as we leave the 60 kilometre speed limit the turn onto the Kakadu Highway looms.

Itโs a slow 200 kilometres to Jabiru. The road is good but slow as it weaves its way through some scenic countryside. Soon enough we enter the Kakadu National Park. At times lush with tropical pines and some rocky outcrops weathered to odd shapes.
As weโve arrived reasonably early I have a walk around the campsite picking a spot with some shade before booking in, getting the spot after a short argument. The sites all have ensuites which is nice but the place is a dust bowl.

We need to be a bit realistic with what we can achieve via a motorhome within Kakadu. The key tourist highlights are 100+ kilometres from each other and thereโs a lot of gravel road. However Cahills Crossing and Ubirr are less than 40 kilometres from Jabiru and the roads are sealed.

Cahills Crossing is claimed to be the most dangerous river crossing in Australia. Could be the saltwater crocodiles, the bull sharks or the stupid people that donโt manage risk very well, like the guy fishing. We arrive 30 minutes before low tide and wait for the action to begin.
The tidal flow changes within a few minutes from downstream to upstream, within 15 minutes itโs flowing over the causeway at speed. Good size fish are crossing as we watch and the crocodiles move in for breakfast.

Itโs a bit of fun but a little like paint drying as well. Crocs donโt seem to do anything in a hurry. No point posting 20 croc photos but this big fellow came in looking for the madman fishing on the causeway.

We have breakfast in the carpark before driving up to Ubirr less than two kilometres away. Iโll leave Ubirr for the next blog as it was special.

Well, you can’t fix stupid!!!!! If he got taken, he’d expect someone to come & help. They are amazing creatures though – silent & deadly!!!
You are making progress, great to hear from you. We are back home after a great trip. It has become very cold and wet and the Farm is suffering from to much rain. But we are well.
Safe travels.

Youโd have to be absolutely nuts to attempt that crossingโฆโฆ.if you get washed off, you either drown in your car or get out and are eaten by crocs! And as for fishing, truly bonkers! Amazing film, though!
