A little chilly overnight, but certainly not cold. Because of the height of the mountains surrounding the valley we donโt feel the sun on the Hymer till 8.30 am. Today we plan to take the Holenstein Bahn to the top station of Mรขnnlichen. Then walk the Panoramaweg to Klein Scheidegg and catch the cog railway back to Grindelwald.
The Holenstein is not as flashy as yesterdayโs Eiger Express. Pictured below, getting ready for take off at the terminal and the giant cow that greets us as we walk out of Mรขnnlichen terminal.
The scenery here at Mรขnnlichen is completely different from the Eiger. Lots of open meadow, cows and chair lifts. We plan walking route #33, but the walk up to the lookout on the hill above us beckons.
Itโs a hard steep walk but the views make it worth while. Pictured below, the walk up.
Obviously thereโs some wonderful background scenery as you can see from the picture of this stunning couple pictured above.
If a trail sign in Switzerland states 1 hour, 50 minutes it means 1 hour, 50 minutes at a cracking pace. In any case #33 is a lovely walk and just slightly down hill most of the way.
Arriving at Kleine Scheidegg railway station we just have time to catch our breath and the train (another cog railway) depart for Grindelwald. Itโs a steep and slow trip back to Grindelwald taking almost 30 minutes.
Not everyone thought the train trip down the mountain was worth staying awake for.
Back at the Hymer in time for some recuperation. We have a BBQ on with our NZ neighbours tonight. Apparently they have a stash of mince Paua in the freezer which we will soon find out is abalone. So that was our day.
