Visited: Munich
Stayed: Stellplatz Alliance Arena, €20, N48.22030, E11.62630
Budget: 101 days @ €91 per day
Step outside last night looking to catch a glimpse of the blue moon we got a red stadium instead. It’s an amazing structure day or night.

Next morning we walk off to the U6 and make our way to the Marienplatz. We are there for the 11am glockenspiel performance, before walking off towards the market square. Passing the Heliig Geist also pictured below we pop in, amazed at the dazzling rococo ceiling.

The maypole pictured above marks the centre of the Viktualienmarkt, the city market. Our guide book warns us how expensive the cafes and beer gardens are but we get two excellent coffees and a small tart for €10 which seems reasonable considering it was the best coffee I haven’t made myself since Aus.
Having finished wandering the market we walk on to Sendlinger Tor (station) and take a U2 (making the most of our day ticket) north to Theresienstaße Tor. From there it’s a relatively short walk to the Alte Pinakothek, Munichs major art museum. There are three Pinakoheks, Alte, Neue and Modern all within a block or two of each other.
We pay the seemingly reasonable some of €5 pp including a slightly long winded but informative audio guide.

As the Neue is closed for renovations the cream of its 19th century works are on special exhibit at the Alte. The special exhibition was fabulous all your favourite impressionists were represented.

Pictured above, a life size portrait by Klimt was dazzling.
We move up stairs to the 16-18th century artists. Room after room of Old Testament religious dramatisations by Rubens and his counterparts reign supreme. Mind you there were a couple of paintings by Rembrandt to keep your interest.

Once again it’s very late lunch by the time we leave the Pinakothek. Interestingly we find a restaurant offering a sushi train just up the street, they basically have an all you can eat lunch special, so that’s what we have.
We wander back to the Marienplatz via the market picking up some slow cooked pork belly and potato salad. The only potato salad nearly as good a Viennese potato salad is German potato salad. There’s a culinary tip for you.
Then it’s the U6 back to the Hymer, our visit to Munich complete. We’ll spend another evening under the glow of a red arena and continue west in the morning.
