Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Saint-Cyprien, France 🇫🇷 2023

Date: 12th July 2023

Travelled: 95 kms from Objat to Saint-Cyprien

Visited: Saint-Amand-de-Coly and Saint-Léon-sur-Vezère

Stayed: Saint-Cyprien Aire CC, €7, N44.86830, E01.04350

Budget: 51 days @ €87 per day

It was a hot and humid last night in Objat. I got up about 3 am and turned off the AC and opened up the Hymer. The cool change had come through as predicted signalling a cooler day today.

At a respectable time we walk off to explore Objat…

Breakfast done the Hymer serviced, we set the GPS for Saint-Amand-de-Coly.

We find a parking spot in the shade although it’s a much cooler today and set off the explore the village.

From our guide book the Most Beautiful Villages in France you’ll find Saint-Amand-de-Coly on page 238. The village of Saint-Amand stands on the junction of three wooden valleys. The village was named after a monk called Amand who brought Christianity to these valleys in the 6th century. Apparently his digs were in a cave just above the abbey. In his honour an Abbey was built here in the 12th century.

Saint-Amand is a small village, it’s dominated by the 30 metre high Abbey Church. There are some wonderfully restored cottages as well as some craft shops and a couple of cafes. This is walnut country and the surrounding farms have groves of walnut trees everywhere.

The abbey church is all that remains of the abbey complex although there are some ruined walls and arches close by. We wander for another 20 minutes taking in the vibe.

Back in the Hymer we set the GPS for Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère.

From our guide book the Most Beautiful Villages in France you’ll find Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère page 248. Saint-Léon stands on a bend in the River Vézère between cliffs and hills. Amazingly it was a thriving port until the railways carved there way through the valleys.

Of our villages to date this year Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère is both scenic and historic. Its very popular although mostly with young people in canoes who seem to form an endless passing parade as they proceed downstream to wherever.

Back in the Hymer we continue on to Saint-Cyprien. The aire CC is full service for what now seems to be a reasonable €7. Given the temperature was less than 30° today it was a more pleasant day of driving and walking the villages.
