Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Olomouc, Czech Republic ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ 2022

Date: 18th August 2022

Travelled: 210 kms from Oล›wiฤ™cim in Poland to Olomouc in the Czech Republic

Visited:  Olomouc

Stayed: Olomouc Campsite, โ‚ฌ27, N49.60850, E17.24300ย ย

Budget: 85 days @ โ‚ฌ108 per day

We try for an early start from Oล›wiฤ™cim today. Itโ€™s another beautiful morning with a lovely cool breeze but the forecast is for a hot day 31ยฐ. So we get about the usual jobs, coffee and fruit before readying the Hymer for the road.

I try looking at alternate routes but in the end leave it to the GPS.

We do a quick Lidl stop before leaving Poland. The EU highway which currently has plenty of roadworks here and there is an easy drive.

Itโ€™s 12.30 when we turn off the D35 and drive into Olomouc. I have the co-ordinates of a paid carpark close the centrum in the GPS. It only takes a few minutes and we are lucky enough to find a spot in the shade. I pay the parking fee of Czk140 (A$8) for 3 hours on my phone which is very convenient as we have no Czk in cash and at this stage, no intention of getting any.

After a coffee and a quick lunch we walk off to do some exploring.

Olomouc is described in our guide book as a sleeper, unknown outside the Czech Republic. Situated in Moravia its one of the regions two major historic cities. It has plenty to offer on a hot sunny afternoon.

Our first stop is Olomouc is its main square, Horni Nรกmรชstรญ. As we approach the gargantuan Holy Trinity Column comes into view. Frankly a bit awe struck by it size and detail of this column built in 1754. Our guide book tells us itโ€™s the largest single baroque sculpture in Europe.

The Town Hallโ€™s astronomical clock was damaged during WWII, rebuilt in the Soviet era with the socialist vision portrayed in the artwork.

So we continue on the Olomoucโ€™s lower square, Dolnรญ Nรกmรชstรญ. Yes more fountains and the Marian Plague Column

Door of the Day

After some wandering we manage to find St. Michaelโ€™s Church. We think itโ€™s the most lavishly decorated church we have seen this trip. The baroque interior, the artworks and the dome, thereโ€™s so much detail. There are renovations so we could only see it from the rear of the nave. Whilst its circa 1251, it has been extended and rebuilt several time since.

We walk the city gardens which follow the old town walls, the Mlynsky Potok (river) winds through the park on this side of town. Itโ€™s a lovely walk, but itโ€™s hot and thereโ€™s little breeze down here. The path leads us to the Archbishopโ€™s Palace come museum but by the time we get there we’ve lost interest and make our way back to the Hymer.

Its a 5 minute drive to Olomoucโ€™s only campsite. Itโ€™s overly expensive and very ordinary other than it has some shade. So we find a spot and put the air-conditioner on.

So that was our dayโ€ฆ
