We go off to the land of nod about 9pm last night. The sun was still an hour from setting but we were still a bit lagged from the overnight ferry, losing an hour with the time change and then spending a few hours wandering Kasteel de Haar. I forgot to mention driving on the wrong side of the road takes a few days to become the norm.

Anyway we go to bed with a view of the Rhine canal and Arnhem Bridge only to wake up to the River Empress (110m long) and some obviously wealthy Swiss tourist now have our view. Suspect they were paying more than €9 a night.

We plan the Kröller Müller Museum today so it’s coffee and breakfast before we hit the road. The museum is in the Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Netherlands’ largest park at 5700 hectares. An easy 20 minute drive north from Arnhem. Obviously the rub is you cannot visit the museum without coughing for the park, that is €11.30pp park entry, plus €4 to park the Hymer, then €12pp to enter the museum itself. However our park entry ticket entitles us to use the park’s pushbikes to get around (bargain). The brochure explains there are 1700 pushbikes available on any day.

Quick background, Anton and Helene Kröller-Müller buy the land as a hunting estate in 1914. They eventually gift the property to the state in 1930, based on the construction of a gallery for Helene’s art collection. Our guide book tells us the museum boast works by the masters (particularly the Dutch) over several centuries particularly a world class collection of works by Van Gogh. There are 180+ sculptures scattered around the grounds just in case your an outdoor type of art person.

The galleries are extensive, particularly of Vincent’s works, there must be 50 or more, takes a while as the locals are particularly focused on his work. Finally outside we walk the parklands around the museum, before riding our bikes back to the Hymer.

Back in the Hymer we turn north for Deventer and hopefully a supermarket on our way. We have a campsite on the river set in the GPS but that’s a story for another day.
