Our night in Almeida was a little noisy, being festival time the band started at 10pm and continued on. We slept through most of it but obviously after the festivities concluded cars and people milling about, were a distraction.
Mind you it has been hot overnight, but our air-conditioner has made inside the Hymer very comfortable. We plan on driving across the frontier into Spain and into Salamanca today. So if we are going to explore Almeida in needs to be early.
Almeida, Centro, Portugal
Map of Almeida, the icon on our parking spot
As you can see from the map of Almeida, the fortress casements cover the complete hill. As the site was only abandoned by the Portuguese military in 1927 itโs all pretty much in tact.
The fortress has no castle, as the original Castelo was demolished during construction (circa 1740). It was built to defend the border with Spain.
During the peninsula war (1812) the French captured and held the fortress for a short time before being driven out by the British.
As we wander we find some of the original military buildings are now a very upmarket riding school.
Feed and muck time.
The dressage arena.
Not sure what this is about ?
Your could spend all day here walking the ramparts, but half an hour was enough for us.
The clock tower (circa 1910)
The Igreja Matriz de N.Sra. das Candeias which translates to โMother Church of our Lady of Light.Without doubt the best house in the street. It was the birthplace of Teรณfilo Carvalho dos Santo who as you now know was a former President of Portugal.
So thatโs Almeida, we return to the Hymer and give it the once over at the service point. Itโs getting hot very quickly now as we leave Almeida and turn for the A62-E90 and Salamanca across the frontier into Spain.
