Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Comino, Malta 2018 ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น

Date:  9th August  2018

Travelled:  Only by scooter, the Hymer is on ramps and hooked up to electricity

Visited: Comino

Stayed:  Camping Malta, L-Armier, โ‚ฌ21.50 pd, all the usual services.  N35.99484, E14,36686

Another quiet evening after a big day in Valletta.  We chatted with a Canadian couple, Dan and Tera for an hour or so.  They are having a break from there english teaching jobs in Andorra, a small principality between France and Spain.  We drove through there a few years ago, so we had something to chat about.

We are planning on visiting the island of Comino today.  As the guide book states Comino is desolate limestone island about 1.5 klms by 2.5 klms.  The island is now a nature reserve and no one lives here, although one spot is designated for overnight camping.  It also many interesting sea caves and the famous Blue Lagoon.  The Lonely Planet warns of how busy it gets.  So we decide to go early, its only a couple of klms from L-Armier to Ramla Bay where the tourist boats depart.

So we pay the โ‚ฌ10pp (return) for the boat ride to the Comino.  We just missed the first boat across but make the second one of the morning at 9.30.
Itโ€™s a hold your hat boat ride.

The only real structure on Comino is this stark tower, originally the Chapel of Our Ladyโ€™s Return from Egypt. Built in 1618, it is a reminder of the more glorious days of the Templer Knights.  We wanted to walk up later in the day, but the track was so rough, we gave it a miss.
The boat ride was pretty good really. The Master takes us in and out of various sea caves.
Pam takes in the views.
Another sea cave, this one cuts through to the cove on the other side.
Everyone got their monies worth dodging in and around the caves and little inlets.
So finally we arrive at the Blue Lagoon, its blue all right.
We soon work out there is nowhere to sit other than a sharp rock, unless you pay for it. So โ‚ฌ20 later we have two chairs and an umbrella and spend the next few hours swimming, sitting in the shade and watching the crowd build.
Mid-day, itโ€™s getting very busy and larger passenger ferries from further afield seem to be arriving every 15 minutes or so.

By 1pm we have had enough, there are queues to get in the water and queues to get back out.  Time to escape the mayhem and return to our little secluded cove at L-Armier.  We have a little lunch and chill out for the rest of the day.  We bump into Dan and Tera again and agree to walk over to the next cove for dinner in a little beach-side restuarant.

Dan, Pam and Tera and the ice-cream sign.
The local beer, Cisk was ice cold and the local Maltese rรณse very crisp…another beautiful day in Malta slips through to the keeper…
