Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Oslo, Norway 2017 ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด

Travelled: 4 kilometres from the Coliseum carpark to the Marina Stellplatz in Oslo.

Visted: Norwegian National Opera House (free), Museum of Contemorary Art, Norway’s Resistance Museum NOK30pp, Viking Ship Museum (NOK80pp)

Stayed: Oslo Marina Stellplatz, all services, NOK300.  N59.92887 E10.70566

It may seem a little strange to only travel 4 kilometres to relocate, but I’ll try to explain.  We arrived in Oslo late yesterday afternoon, if we went directly to the stellplatz we would have had to pay NOK300 (about A$46) just to park over night, as they charge for the night.  As such we stayed in the Colliseum car park for NOK50, which was then free after 8pm, saving about A$37.  But the Colliseum car-park, charges NOK25 per hour after 9am, so if your staying all day your better off at the stellplatz over a full day and night.

Its all a bit of a mystery to me but Pam has conducted a cost benefit analysis and it’s better not to argue.

So we are parked in this huge stellplatz holding 250+ motorhomes and its almost full.  On the edge of the marina facing the bay, so there is a view if your in the front few rows. There is a bus stop just outside the stellplatz and we are soon on the 160 heading into the city.  In less than 10 minutes, the bus driver gives us a wave and suggests we walk down from here.

We step off the 160 at the National Theatre ๐ŸŽญ, but as it was wrapped partially in scaffold not a good photo. So this pavilion and statue nearby is a substitute.
Oslo is awash with building projects or so it would seem. The National Parliament with its matching cranes.
The Stortingsgata is the central boulevard which host many of Oslo’s feature buildings. It also provides a wonderful display of flowers as you pass by.
We soon find Oslo Cathedral and pop in for a quick look.
Looking from the Cathedral’s bronze doors inside.
The Cathedral’s alterpiece.
As you can see it’s busy in Oslo this morning.
Via the Apple Store, our next find is Oslo’s new opera house, with its vast walkways.
The roof of the opera house provides a great panorama. Click and it should open.

Pam and a bit of street art outside the Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo
At the tourist office, we are told some of the museums are free today.  The Contempory Art Museum is one and it’s on our way.  So we go in and have a wander.
Make of this what you will ?
From the Contemporary Arts Museum we continue on to the Akershus Fortress. There are several smaller museums here.
One of the buildings in the Akershus Complex houses the Norway’s Resistance Museum. A very interesting look at the Norwegian resistance to Nazi occupation during WWII.

Its well after lunch-time as we walk back down from the fortress to the quay for a bite to eat and a leg rest.  Pam found this place that did a health style wraps, so enough said about lunch.  From wharf 3 we go catch the Bygdรธy Ferry across the bay.  Bygdรธy is a peninsula on the west side of Oslo that also has a number of museums and an extensive park.

Luckily its only a short walk from the pier to the Viking Ship Museum as it starts to rain โ˜”๏ธ again.
There are 3 Viking ships within the museum. Two have had some restoration, one has been preserved as it was found. They are all over a 1,000 years old. Apparently all 3 were funeral ships, that had been buried in mounds.
You can have a read yourself.
Got a fairly strong dressing down from a 7 foot tall security guard for this photo. I lent over the chain and took this photo through the rollick holes on the side of the ship. Not a bad photo if I do say.

Well that’s Oslo.  From the Bygdรธy its only a relatively short distance back to the marina stellplatz but it’s still another ticket and 2 buses.  We feel we have had a good look around and spending another NOK300 without something specific to accomplish would be silly.
