Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Mediterranean Cruise, Naples & the Isle of Capri, Italy. 2011 ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

We cruise overnight from Leghorn (Livorno), again the seas have been flat. ย Pam and I walk out on deck to see we are standing off Naples awaiting our pushback to the dock. ย There is a heavy mist in the bay, we can only just make out Capri across the bay. ย It’s already very warm and we have decided to make our own way to Capri rather than do an organised tour.

We are off down the gangway as soon as the ship clears the authorities. ย We have done a quick google and found where to buy our tickets. ย Anyway we quickly make our way and join the queue, which is moving very slowly toward the ticket window. ย The scheduled time for the ferry passes and we still don’t have our tickets, long story short there is a bit of yelling from someone out the back and we suddenly have our tickets and we just make the ferry. ย On the ferry a tout is selling a bus tour of the Island for โ‚ฌ10, we risk two tickets.

The ferry takes about 30 minutes and we dock in the harbour and follow the little man. ย Apparently the bus leaves in 30 minutes and we wander dockside and have a coffee. ย Good to his word the bus arrives and we set off on our bus. ย We basically work out its a jump on jump off bus as we turn onto the Via Marina Grande. ย Our Tout has recommended going onto Anacapri first and working our way back. ย The road is as narrow and winding as we have ever scene. ย As our bus meets another vehicle, both slow to a walking pace and pass each other with a few inches to spare. ย However the view is great, however it is limited by the mist.

Once in Anacapri we make our way to the chair lift. ย It appears to be a remnant from a ski field in the sixties. ย Anyway we have ride to the top, travelling over people’s back yards and gardens to the top of the hill. ย You can see the whole island pretty well, including the Blue Grotto almost directly below the look out. ย It’s now very hot and there is nearly no breeze. ย The blue waters of the ย Tyrrhenian Sea look cool and inviting. ย We have our swimmers but there’s no beach close by.

We take the chair lift back to Anacapri and wander the shops. ย We do find a great little souvenir before heading to the bus stop. ย The bus is full as we head back to Capri. ย We jump off the bus and head for the square. ย There are people everywhere, it’s so hot and there is little shade. ย We grab a salad roll, some water and try and find a little shade. ย There are lots of high end fashion shops here, we don’t see any customers. ย We decide it’s pool time on the LotS and we head for the bus and ferry back to Naples. ย We have had a great adventure on the cheap and I would recommend Capri.
