Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Ludwigslust, Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2022

Date: 8th August 2022

Travelled: 170 kms from Wahlstedt to Ludwigslust, Germanyย ย

Visited:ย Schloss Ludwigslustย  ย

Stayed: Ludwigslust Stellplatz, โ‚ฌ12, N53.32750, E11.49050ย ย

Budget: 75 days @ โ‚ฌ107 per day

Pam has sussed out Wahlstedtโ€™s pool, to her shock and dismay itโ€™s not heated. The attendant tells her itโ€™s currently 20ยฐ. Pam pikes and we make ready for the road once again.

We say goodbye and thanks to our Dutch neighbours and their two beautiful Shiba Inu dogs. We were telling them we were surprised to find supermarkets are closed here on Sunday. So she produces a can from their larder and tells us to try Kohl for dinner.

To our surprise it was pretty good, wouldnโ€™t like it everyday, but a bit like backed beans on toast, good for a Sunday night every now and then. Weโ€™ll buy a can ourselves just in case we get caught out again.

Once we settle into the stellplatz I check on the ticket price to find like most other things in Ludwigslust the schloss is closed on Mondays. Pam wants a haircut and I could do with an afternoons rest, we decide to visit the schloss tomorrow morning.

So we walk off to find a hairdresser and take in the town. Ludwigslust came into being in 1724 when Prince Ludwig decided to build himself a hunting lodge here. Later, after his succession to the Dukedom he named the schloss and the village that had grown around it after himself, Ludwigslust or Ludwigโ€™s Pleasure.

Back from exploring we take a break, Pam has her appointment at 5pm and the rest of the day slides through to the keeper.

Our visit to Schloss Ludwigslust starts with a walk of the parklands of the estate. Itโ€™s a 120 hectares of established trees, ponds, paths and monuments. Throw in a mausoleum, church, bell tower and a cemetery and you have it in a nut shell. Itโ€™s a lovely walk but Germany has suffered a series of heatwaves this year and the grassland is really suffering.

So weโ€™ve done the parklands, itโ€™s time for the main event. We walk to the main entrance of the schloss just as a group of elderly locals arrive on the bus. Looks like its going to be a slow tour until Pam slips past a couple of old ladies whose Zimmerman frames have locked wheels at the entrance. We pay our โ‚ฌ4.50 pp seniors rate and leave the security officer to untangle the jammed entrance.

There is a room of clocks, miniatures, medals, ivory, wax impression, weapons and Meissen dust collectors not to mention whatever else took the Duke and later the Grand Dukes fancy. The artwork was particularly impressive.

Whilst I jest about our visit. Ludwigsโ€™ hunting lodge is an impressive building and the collection it houses very interesting. We walk the collection for 90 minutes without distraction most likely due to the traffic jam down stairs. Mind you every room we walked into we seemed to set off some alarm, so we finished the tour being escorted by a woman who had obviously worked for the Stasi in a previous life.

Our visit to Ludwigslust complete we walk back to the Hymer and get ready for the road. We fill with diesel at โ‚ฌ1.88 per litre (about A2.76) and make for the A24 and Wismar.
