Travelled: Only into Venice in Veneto (by public transport), Italy.
Visited: Venice.
Stayed: Venice, Sosta San Giuliano โฌ18, all services, electricity extra โฌ4. N45.46755, E12.27927
Budget: 106 days @ โฌ93 per day.
Whilst we had a wonderful day in Venice yesterday we wake a little footsore today. We managed a load of washing last night for โฌ5 and get most of it dry for an extra โฌ2. No need for a particularly early start, so we have coffee, fruit then breakfast before taking the long walk to the bus stop about 9.30am.
As season Venice commuters itโs all very easy today. Our Venice travel cards (โฌ20pp) donโt expire until lunch time and we may well wing it or just purchase individual tickets after that. We noticed during our several trips yesterday we appeared to be the only ones validating our tickets ? Is it possible the Italians are all micro-chipped ?
Once again on the grand canal. The Ponte di Rialto, Venice most iconic bridge. Attracts Asian tourist like bees to the honey pot. You can loose an eye to a selfie stick just like that.
So many iconic views.
The traffic is light this morning.
Once again we alite at San Marco.
Venice, Veneto, Italy
We walk along the canal at San Marco to the ferry terminal outside the Hotel Danieli and take the ferry to Campo San Giorgio. Whilst it stands on a separate island, itโs considered part of Guidecca district.
The Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore and itโs marble facade and tower is its main features. Its construction began in 1560. At โฌ6pp the bell tower was too expensive.
The guide book highlights the works by Tintoretto, that stand on either side of the Altar. This one the last supper.
We looked at this painting for a while, unsure of what it was meant to represent ?
The Choir.
Behind the church is the Fondazione Giorgio Cini. It wasnโt on our list but there is a special exhibition on for a fortnight and itโs free. So we offer ourselves as rent-a-crowd.
From Giudecca we ferry back to San Marco, then take a Vaporetto #1 to the Dorsoduro district. Thatโs the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute as we cross.
Venice, Veneto, Italy
You cannot get the Basilica in frame once you land. It makes little difference as it was closed for lunch, so we rapidly lost interest.
So we just wander along taking in the postcard views.
We originally planned to visit the Peggy Guggenheim here on Dorsoduro today. Checking the guide back at the Hymer this morning we found itโs closed on Tuesday. In Venice thereโs always another famous gallery to visit. On our way we find a lovely little pub called the Corner Pub for lunch. Nice view ?
Next…
Itโs not far and a pleasant walk to the Galleria dellโAccademia.
So we find the dellโAccademia without any problem pay our โฌ15pp and spend the next couple of hours wandering about.
The Gallerie dellโAccademia is set within an old church. Itโs not as if Venice doesnโt have many churches to spare. A floor has been added within the naive, getting you much closer to the original ceiling. I found the ceiling as interesting as the artwork.
I love this โWhereโs Wallyโ piece as well.
So itโs getting late again. When we walk out of the gallery and make our way to the ferry dock and the Vaporetto back to Roma terminus, itโs almost 5pm. We have sore feet again, but have enjoyed our second day as much as the first.
Back safely in the Hymer, we have a drink and make dinner. Then start plotting tomorrowโs adventure…
