{"id":9666,"date":"2017-10-19T17:05:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-19T17:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=9666"},"modified":"2019-05-25T07:16:51","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T21:16:51","slug":"making-for-the-chunnel-france-%f0%9f%87%ab%f0%9f%87%b7-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=9666","title":{"rendered":"Tyne Cot and the Chunnel, Belgium 2017 \ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddf7"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Travelled: 209 kilometres from Revin, France to Ypres, Belgium<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Visited: Bailleul Cemetery Extension in France, then Ypres, Tyne Cot Cemetery and Polygon Wood in Belgium.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Stayed: Municipal Aire in Ypres, \u20ac8.50 &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/9Qyrp8Svrge9Up6r5\">N50.83539, E02.90526<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We check-out of Revin after servicing the Hymer. &nbsp;Saying goodbye to the semi-stray dogs that befriend everyone at dinner time. &nbsp;Today is a half-day of driving, we avoid the freeway and drive the D roads as best we can. &nbsp;After stopping for coffee, then stopping for lunch we arrive in Bailleul (Belgium) mid-afternoon. &nbsp;Stop at a hardware store looking for a new filler hose without success before continuing on to the cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may remember we have a Great Uncle George Bentley Guymer buried here in the Bailleul Cemetery Extension. &nbsp;We are very close to the border with Belgium, it\u2019s only a kilometres or so to the north-east. &nbsp;On the 3rd June 1917, George was wounded during an artillery barrage in the trench, his pioneer platoon were constructing, near Messines, Belgium. &nbsp;This was part of the preparation for the 3rd Battle of Ypres which commenced on the 6th June. &nbsp;He was recovered by stretcher bearers and transported to the a casualty clearing station adjacent to the Hospital in Bailleul. Tyne Cot is the largest British War Cemetery in the world. &nbsp;The remains of almost 12,000 soldiers are buried here. &nbsp;The names of another 35,000 dead, whose bodies where never recovered are recorded here.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tyne_Cot_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"1100\"\/><figcaption>Pam at the grave of William Cooper, killed in 1917.
