{"id":8598,"date":"2017-09-14T14:56:04","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T14:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=8598"},"modified":"2020-01-19T08:51:00","modified_gmt":"2020-01-18T21:51:00","slug":"oland-sweden-%f0%9f%87%b8%f0%9f%87%aa-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=8598","title":{"rendered":"\u00d6land, Sweden 2017 \ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Travelled: 246 kilometres from Vimmerby to Gr\u00f6nh\u00f6gen on the island of<\/b> <strong>\u00d6land, Sweden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: Borgholms Castle SEK90pp, Solliden Slott SEK100pp and\u00a0Gr\u00f6nh\u00f6gen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Stayed:&nbsp;Gr\u00f6nh\u00f6gen marina stellplatz SEK150, all services including washing machine and dryer. <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/2DvSMtGhBPHrfBkY8\">N56.26635, E16.39670<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Budget: 69 days @ \u20ac89 per day<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>All was good in Astrid&#8217;s stellplatz last night, just us and a hundred vacant motorhome spots all around us. &nbsp;Some company would have been nice, but the fact it was a free night was more comforting. &nbsp;We have a quite a few kilometres to do today so we have a coffee and go over to the service point and do the usual business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving south-east down the 34 there is little traffic and we spend most of our time looking out for speed cameras. &nbsp;Sweden is not a drivers paradise, so its 80-90 kph passing pine forests lakes and more pine forest. &nbsp;At Kalmar we turn off for&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: Roboto-Regular, HelveticaNeue, Arial, sans-serif; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;\">\u00d6land.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: Roboto-Regular, HelveticaNeue, Arial, sans-serif; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/\u00d6land_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Crossing from Kalmar to \u00d6land along the 12 kilometre long bridge. The views are amazing up and down the Kalmar Straights. &nbsp;<span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: Roboto-Regular, HelveticaNeue, Arial, sans-serif; text-align: start; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: #ffffff;\">\u00d6land sits in the Baltic Sea, being 137 kilometres long and 16 kilometres wide, surprisingly it has a population of 25,000 people.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/\u00d6land_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Once on \u00d6land we turn north for Borgholm Castle. Looks interesting.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/\u00d6land_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We pay our entry fee and go to the castle entrance to start exploring. We download the App and listen to the commentary as we walk around. It started off a little corny, but once we got past the start it was very interesting.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/\u00d6land_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Borgholm was built in the 12th century, but extended several time in the Middle Ages. Having been the site of several battles and sieges against the German and Danes. It&#8217;s use as a castle discontinued in 1772. A fire in 1806 burnt through the castle, leaving it in ruins.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/\u00d6land_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Tessin&#8217;s Gate is one of the view pieces of facade left from the 1650 baroque renovation by KIng Karl Gustav X.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/\u00d6land_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"1100\"\/><figcaption>Now here is an interesting fact. Good old King Karl was so concerned about the peasant farmers poaching his game he decreed that only 3 legged dogs where allowed on \u00d6land. The term Slott implies palace, but its construction is in the Italian Villa style.
