It was a very warm evening at Camping Munster, but it had cooled enough to turn off the AC and open the windows after 10 pm and it was a good sleep.  It’s already warming as we pack up the Hymer and get ready to depart, a bit annoyed to find we have to pay an extra \u20ac1 for water on top of our overnight fee.  From now on I will check what’s included in the overnight cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We depart Munster heading north-west on the B54.  From our experience so far, the roads in Germany are amazing.  The B54 is just a single carriageway, yet there are no cross roads, traffic lights or roundabouts.  Just ramps on or off !  Every 5 kilometres there is a passing lane about 1.5 kilometres long.  50 kilometres later we turn onto the A31 an autobahn heading north, an even better road.  However we are constantly passed by cars travelling at blinding speed.  I was under the impression that the general speed limit in Germany is now 130 kph.  I notice our GPS shows no speed limit on the autobahn and the black BMW and Mercedes don’t seem to have a limit either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An hour later we roll into Meppen.  We met with a German couple yesterday who had recommended Meppen and the cycle path along the Dortmund canal.  The stellplatz has 8 dedicated spots and 4 are already taken, so after working out where the afternoon shade will be, we pick our spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rathaus or City Hall to those of us who cannot speak German. The Altstadt in Meppen seems a little strange, there are a few very well preserved buildings but the rest of the centre of town looks no more than 5-10 years old.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It’s a very hot afternoon, a large electronic sign alternating between the time and temperature tells us it 35\u00b0. No bronze figures for Pam here in Meppen it’s all about the children.  Very few shops are air-conditioned it seems and people are either sitting in cafes eating huge ice creams or having a beer.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The church was very sparse inside other than the lovely gilded altar piece. Mind you it had a very modern touch, the old bronze doors had electronic sensors. As you walked up and moved to touch the door handle the doors opened automatically.  Pam thought it was a bit spooky !<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It’s too late and far too hot for cycling the canal this afternoon, so we’ll have a ride in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s was a hot night so we left the AC on all night.  It’s already warm when we set off to find the canal.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Dortmund-Ems Canal is a popular attraction for the cyclist. You can travel on the cycle way from Emden on the North Sea to central Germany on the Ems Canals.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Dortmund-Ems is a freeway for huge barges carrying coal to the numerous power stations along the Ems.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
