{"id":4641,"date":"2016-07-13T16:13:14","date_gmt":"2016-07-13T16:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=4641"},"modified":"2019-05-18T07:04:12","modified_gmt":"2019-05-17T21:04:12","slug":"exeter-cathedral-to-the-dartmoor-national-park-england-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=4641","title":{"rendered":"Exeter to Dartmoor, England 2016 \ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Travelled : 99 kilometres from Colaton Raleigh to Lydford, Devon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited : Exeter (Park and Ride \u00a35 double), Exeter Cathedral (\u00a36 double senior), Royal Albert Museum (free), Dartmoor National Park<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed : Castle Inn, Lydford (Brits Stop free) <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/BGBiw2iwtVM2\">N50.64375 W4.10901<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>We start our day by thanking our host at the Otter Inn, before heading off for Exeter. &nbsp;Our plan is to do the &#8216;park and ride&#8217; into Exeter but when we arrive at the carpark it has a height barrier, which defeats the purpose so it would seem. &nbsp;We drive up an adjoining street, the first business a tile shop has a big carpark. &nbsp;I walk in an ask if we can park there and he thanks us for asking and says &#8216;no problem&#8217; and shows us the shortcut back to the park and ride. &nbsp;He makes some remark about cricket which I respond without a profanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Exeter.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Park and Ride, \u00a35. Worked out well, we need to change our thinking about how we get in and out of large English town. &nbsp;15 minutes later we are dropped off near the tourist information centre.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Exeter_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Walking the laneways of Exeter we found this odd little pedestrian bridge.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Exeter_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Construction on the Cathedral at Exeter started in 1114. &nbsp;It has the longest continuos medieval vaulted ceiling in the world at 96 metres.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Exeter_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The Cathedral vaulting has 400 rounded keystones all decoratively carved and painted. &nbsp;It&#8217;s a warm and friendly place with lots of guides to ask questions and a guide booklet with a comprehensive history.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Exeter_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Part of the vault and great glass window dated 14 century.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Enough Cathedral for one day we wander around the main square and shopping precinct to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. We have a coffee and spend an hour going through the exhibits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Exeter_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We found some very odd exhibits in the RAMM.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Time to hit the road again and we head west out of Exeter and start the climb into the Dartmoor National Park and onto the high moors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Dartmoor_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The road into the park is narrow and very winding. From Moretonhampstead the road climbs steeply up onto the moor, the trees disappear and the road opens up.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Dartmoor_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Cows and sheep are wandering the road.
